in short, i've been thinking of frozen a lot recently and wanted to rewatch it, because at 5 years old i couldn't exactly analyze the plot well. this is a reaction/recap, hope u enjoy!
Introduction
the opening song by the icemen is basically the whole movie, which i love and never noticed before. "split the ice apart, and break the frozen heart"
i thought the animation wouldn't be as good as i remembered, but omg this is gorgeous. the effects when elsa turns the floor to ice or crystallizes everything are absolutely stunning and i loved watching them as a kid.
DO you want to build a snowman?
- why am i getting emotional.
- elsa's 18 here, is anna my age? i don't know how to feel abt that
for the first time in forever
- such a good song i'm so embarrassed
- the animation in this sequence w the paintings is so beautiful
- hans is really ugly
love is an open door
i wasn't excited to get to this one because all of hans and anna's bonding moments shown are her being herself and him being a brick wall. obviously i would never fall in love with a man like that but their harmonies are sooooo good. the lyrics are not my thing but once the chorus hits, oh man. disney sing-along classic.
now things are starting to speed up and everyone knows elsa has powers as they go out of control. i always loved the little detail of the woman with a baby being the only one to ask if she was ok.
let it go
yeah, overplay got me on this one. tell my why i knew 90% of the lyrics still. i don't think this is the best song so far but gawd damn this animation sequence is a masterpiece. also, insane performance from adele dazeem, how on earth do you reach those notes in the final chorus.
i'm worried for the rest of the movie because i've already obtained peak at 30 mins in, and the only other song i remember at this point is that olaf song about summer. and i know that once kristoff, olaf, and the moose show up, there's not much else.
that olaf song about summer + the trolls' song
since olaf has showed up we have cut our "serious plot-impacting moments" in halfff i hate you small snowman.
also it's about time i bring up that elsa and anna look like the same person and i wish their faces were a little different.
hans is evil
i have a bit of a problem with this twist. i just don't feel like there was any set up at all for him to secretly be evil. they could have showed him acting more ruthless while hunting for elsa, but he specifically told the guards not to hurt her, and when they tried to, he saved her life. his motive to want both the sisters dead to be king makes sense, but when he betrays anna it just feels way out of character. there weren't any real clues for the audience to predict the twist, other than the existence of a 2nd love interest who has better chemistry with the protag. as many have said, a good twist villain shouldn't make you wonder "how could i have seen that coming?" but rather "how couldn't i have seen that coming?" i just feel like it could have been written better because he does not show any signs of ruthlessness or malice up until the villain monologue.
elsa saves her sister + final thoughts
the ending of this movie is obviously very sweet, and i have no complaints. overall, the pacing of this movie is like, super weird. the hit songs all happen within the first 30 minutes and then kristoff, moose, and olaf show up, and it's just reprises and random jingles. it's forgivable, though. i think hans as a villain was also a weird move, and a lot of the movie could be trimmed down (marshmallow the snowman anybody?), but it's a movie for kids. the fun stuff is padding for the trauma that goes on in the first 10 minutes, cuz their parents sucked. i don't think i'll watch this movie again for another 20 years, but i'm glad i rewatched it because my god do those 3 songs hit.
bye love u all <3
