For around 10 years now, Facebook and Instagram have been two of the biggest household names for social media sites. Having social media at the time was very much a mandatory thing socially, as if you weren't on social media, how are people able to contact you?
It's originally started as just something that you would do when you got home to fill some time in, or maybe you were just checking it during your lunch break when you were on your own? but as time progressed on, it mutated into an obsession with the sites, with the majority of the population now endlessly scrolling just in case they miss out on something…
But in the last year or two something has changed. A huge variety of analysis reports have found that people aren't engaging with the content on social media as much as they were originally. People used to be constantly liking and following, commenting and sharing, posting and tagging, and although this is still a frequent set of actions for many, it seems that the rate of people doing this has started to slow.
I believe this is because a large quantity of social media users have felt that the content on social media is now tired and overused, as when speaking to a lot of people on this topic, I've been told that people just don't enjoy using social media anymore. The original joy of finding new and exciting content just isn't there anymore. The whole novelty of social media is starting to end, in favour of people gaining back their independence.
This definitely was a long time coming, as we can see now that the majority of the social media network’s content makers have an ongoing pressure to post shorter, unique content. People don't want to watch a 10 minute video, scripted and planned, with ads every few seconds from someone twice a day anymore. They want to watch a few unique one minute videos every day. Peoples attention spans of started to decrease for social media content, and the cracks are really starting to show.
Have you noticed recently that you haven't been getting as many likes on social media? No, this isn't because you're deemed less relevant! It’s simply down to the fact that people just don't enjoy social media content as much they used to. You could post the best photo in the world and I bet it won't even get as many likes as some of the weird previous posts you've made. Don't take it personally, it's just because instagram and Facebook are just about to die a slow and painful death.
I believe that this summer is going to be one of the biggest killers for the two sites, people are gonna be way more eager to experience real life when the Covid restrictions have been decreased. I believe that another reason as to why people are starting to stay away from social media is mainly because of the newfound information that has started to gain traction.
You know, Facebook with its privacy and advertising, knowing more on you than you know on yourself. Especially with movies like the social dilemma coming out (a movie that was on Netflix’s top 10 watched list for a really long time) making this information more accessible to more mainstream audiences that might not have known about this previously.
It's also really interesting to see that companies like Apple have actually started to block a lot of Facebook's trackers and services. I believe that this war between Apple and social media companies is only going to get ugly, as apple would definitely be able to kill off the sites with the correct strategies in place.
I'm actually really excited when it comes to the downfall of these two sites, as it gonna be really exciting to see what happens next! I believe that people are going to spend a lot less time on social media, and when they do spend time online, people may start to diversify when it comes to sites they use (I’m especially hoping that people may flood to SpaceHey as I really like it here! <3)
So yeah, here we are, here’s to the downfall of Facebook and Instagram!
