woes of linux and music

over the past few months, my laptop has truly shown its age. and so, i put linux into it. most everything worked just as well or better than on windows... except for ableton, my preferred daw. i tried to run it via wine, but that was a stuttery and crackly mess (almost like a 30 year old vinyl that has been played a thousand times). my guide to linux found someone who was able to get it working with lutris, but that is missing some functionality- notably midi.

therefore, my only way to record multi-track songs is through my zoom h4's multitrack mode and audacity. pain. i mean, it is fun to work within limitations, and i have now had the chance to truly delve into those two recording methods, but i do miss just having an idea and being able to execute it. thankfully, i was able to cop a new laptop finally, but for now i am relegated to archaic recording methods.

Kinda sad actually. Although I don't use Ableton (I'm a FL Studio pleb haha), I've got decent luck on Windows programs using PlayOnLinux. It is essentially a GUI frontend for Wine but it lets you choose different Wine versions and has some presets for some well-known programs (like FL Studio, again). The crackly audio thing also happens with me, but whenever that happens I just close the rest of my programs to make space for it. This is because running Windows programs are more taxing on Linux compared to native programs, naturally. You're kinda running a whole kernel language conversion thing by using Wine so that is also the cause.
My tip is just move back to Windows if you really need to use that specific program, everyoine has different needs after all.

yeah, i am back on windows right now on a capable machine and it is quite nice to be able to use ableton again haha. however, my linux adventure over the past few months was something i thoroughly enjoyed, and so i am certain i shall return to that eventually. :)
