Song Spotlight: Death - Scavenger of Human Sorrow

Death was a death metal band active from the mid-80s to 2001. Their final album The Sound of Perseverance is one of my all-time favorite albums, and lately I've been rocking out to its opening track, "Scavenger of Human Sorrow." This album is probably the band's most progressive, with this track running through 4 different sections and a guitar solo, fast chugging riffs and middle-fretboard acrobatics all throughout.

A big personal reason I love metal is all the crazy, technical guitar sounds they produce, and with this track I'm currently obsessed with the pinch harmonic. This technique involves slightly catching the string with a finger right after strumming it, damping the main note frequency and leaving the high-pitched overtone. On electric guitars this produces a demonic squeal, which you can hear and see in the song at 1:27 here. So awesome!! I find it neat that for the rest of the repetitions of the riff he sticks with normal note strumming, really makes the start of this section pop.

Here's another video I watched on pinch harmonics, always more to learn about! :)
