HIIHIII I'm finally doing another blog! And it's about all the books I've read this year so far, what I'm currently reading, and what I plan to read in these last few months of the year! This is in the order of when I finished them. I'll also try and give no spoilers in case anyone wants to read these.
I try and read a bit of everything so hopefully you can find a book here for you! This is more of my thoughts and opinions on these books so feel free to disagree with me.
Enjoy me yapping about what I love to do most!
Books I have read:
- Animal Farm by George Orwell
Animal Farm is an allegory of Russia during the ruling of Vladimir Lenin and is one of the popular banned books. George Orwell's other work that is also well known is 1984 which also touches on topics of political corruption and dystopian societies. I could talk on and on about this book and how glad I am to have this as my first read of the year. This is one of my personal favourite allegory stories that represents it's message well and even if you don't read, you should definitely pick up this one. Also for a classic, it is a very easy read if you want to get into the classics as a beginner.
- Alice Adventure's in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll
There are different copies/editons of these 2 stories but the copy I got just had both. Usually you may see these 2 sold as separate but Thought the Looking Glass is a continuation to Alice Adventure's in Wonderland. So you may have seen or heard of Alice in Wonderland by Disney and all it's other adaptations and I've been a long time fan of anything Alice in Wonderland related so I was excited to read this. I love how there is no actual plot and just follows Alice through all the things she experiences in Wonderland and how it shows her innocent mind convey more adult topics. I'm not a big poetry person but some of my favourite poems come from here and I strangly felt a lot of nostalgia while reading this.
- The Privilege of Youth by Dave Pelzer
You may know Dave Pelzer from his most known memoir "A Child Called It" but this memoir tells about his teenage life and if you're sad about hia first book then you should totally read this one! I enjoyed reading this(and honestly his memoir is probably my favourite personal memoir) and I found this on really relatable with my current life as a teenager! There's also a bunch of quotes in this that motivated me as when I read this I was going thought a rough time and this book helped me.
- The Woman in Me by Britany Spears
Another memoir! And this one is by Britany Spears!!! Here she talks about her music career from beginning to end along with all the good and bad that came with it. I don't listen to much of her music and probably only have 2 songs by her in my playlist but she's still such as inspiration to me to keep going and after reading about her perspective on what she's been through I look at her with more hope. I've seen some people who have read this book not even finish it so this may not be for everyone but if you really like Britany Spears and look up to her like I do then you should read this.- Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
One of John Steinbeck's most popular works, a classic, and also a banned book! Set during the Great Depression with 2 friends trying to find jobs while dreaming of getting away together one day. Some people may hate me for what I'm about to say as this may be an unpopular opinion but this is not one of my favourite reads. The reason for that is just because this isn't one of my all time favourite genres to read. But still, I could see why this is other people's favourite book. It tells the story of a friendship and loyalty beautifully and is another classic that's great if you want to get into reading.- Have A Little Faith by Mitch Albom
You may know Mitch Albom from his other books "Tuesdays with Morrie" or "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" and I will admit, I had no interest in these books at first as religious topics aren't my favourite to read but I read this book because it's my cousin's favourite and decided to just give it a shot and after I read it, I now want to read his other books. This is a biography of Albom's experiences with Rabbi Lewis and Pastor Covington. As I started to read it I thought I wouldn't enjoy it that much but in the end I actually cried to this book. Maybe I'm just sensitive but some of the events that were talked about in this book made me believe a little bit in my faith. If anyone has read his other books do tell if they're worth reading!- Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto
This book easily made one of my all time favourites and is the best thing I've read all this year. Most Japanese literature, in my opinion, can describe loneliness the best and I felt that way with this book. About a woman who goes through different events in her life but still finding comfort in the kitchen. This book reminds me of the comfort I find in my interests and how happy I am to have them and I think some people can also relate to this. It's a short book that everyone can easily read and I think it's criminally underrated.- Dead Poets Society by Nancy H. Kleinbaum
This came out after the movie, I will say this book is not very well liked in the Dead Poets Society fandom and I can totally see why. The movie is superior too me but I still enjoyed reading this as you will read about scenes that were deleted from the movie. Alas, there is also scenes that were not in the movie and were added in the book which is why some people dislike this. I still read it though, it's a great autum read and I also cried to this one but I don't think it's a must read and people could live without reading it.- The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
A gothic classic that's perfect to read during fall season! A lot of people love this one and after reading it I totally get it. A philosophical novella about a man named Dorian Gray who becomes almost immortal and forever young as his painting ages while he becomes insane as the book progresses. From beginning to end, I was INVESTED into this. This was such a fun read and watcing Dorian drive himself to madness is probably the best character development I have ever read. This could also be considered a "dark academy" book so if that's your vibe then you may love this book!My most recent read that I finished! The last story published by Bukowski before he died, this story is set in Los Angeles which follows a detective who solves his cases by procrastination. The first thing that drew me to this book is how Charles Bukowski dedicated this to "Bad Writing" and this by far the funniest book I've ever read. I love the characters, especially Nick Belane who is the protagonist in this story and also how annoying some of the characters could be. I just kept having to turn the page with how deep I was into this.
Books I'm currently reading:
- The Secret History by Donna Tart
So I obviously can't say much since I'm still reading this but I'm almost 200 pages into it and it's a great book! I quite literally have only heard good things about The Secret History and can see why a lot of people say it's a favourite.
- The Stange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
I wanted to read a spooky book since it's October so I started this one! It's around 100 pages and I'm halfway through it at the moment. Since it's a short book I'll probably finish it soon and the drama so far is amazing and really intriguing me.
A few books I want to get around to reading before the year ends:- The Lord of the Flies by William Golding
- My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh
- 1984 by George Orwell
That's all I have to say(for now) but let me know if you want a separate blog post just dedicated to me talking about a specific book on here! I'll gladly do it!!!
