What you are about to read is entirely an opinion piece. I, the writer of this piece, am not a professional critic and will never claim to be. I am merely a reality television fanatic with to much time on their hands.
Early 2000's Reality TV
Growing up with a mom who worked from home there was always some kind of television show on in for background noise. Especially reality TV. Either the Kardashians, Real Housewives or Teen Mom usually graced my household screen. However, there were a few series that captivated my attention more than most.
The following series are as said, and personally I still binge watch these to this day.
Princess
I believe this reality TV show is Canadian since most episodes showcase in Toronto.
The individuals that the show Princess follows embody my worst fear. Having a shopping addiction.
As a young woman, yes I love to shop but I feel like that is an overtly stigmatized stereotype. However, the subjects in Princess need genuinely need help because they are spending WELL above their means.
I did notice a pattern though that most people in the show at one point had high earning jobs and then either were let go or faced budget cuts and don't know how to manage their money in order to cater to their new income and struggle to make the appropriate lifestyle changes.
What Not to Wear
As an eleven/twelve year old girl this show was my guide to style regardless of the fact that middle school me got her clothes exclusively from The Buckle. (No hate, I still love it and the sales reps love me <3).
But I do think that some of the people showcased didn't really struggle with style that much and were just flat out being bullied for having different aesthetic preferences.
Nonetheless, we have to remember that this aired in the early 2000's.
Say Yes to the Dress
Genuinely what younger me thought wedding dress shopping would be like. Am I married? No. Am I engaged? No. Do I have a pinterest board with my future wedding mapped out? Yes. At the end of the day I am just a girl.
A HUGE reminder for this show, for myself and others, is that the budget the women on the show have for a wedding dress is ENORMOUS - at least in my opinion.
Like a $5,000-$8,000 dress is insane even in today's economy! But I also feel like the attention these women get from the sales associates is top notch - however, I have see the "say yes" horror stories posted on the internet and it doesn't shock me to much in all honesty.
At the end of the day it is reality TV.
America's Next Top Model
Tyra Banks had a chokehold on almost every middle school girl I knew.
Not so much anymore.
Although very intriguing I think the culture perpetrated in the show was pretty toxic but younger me just couldn't look away.
The Simple Life
Paris Hilton - what more can I say.
I would like to thank you all for reading
I hope you are having a good day/night
