all animals do drugs.
red foxes are immune to the toxins in amanita mushrooms and consume them just for the fun psychoactive effects.
squirrels, birds, bears and deer eat fermented berries and seeds to get drunk.
chimpanzees chew on the leaves of the kratom trees for the opiods.
dolphins kill and play with pufferfish to get high off the toxin they release.
we all know how crazy cats go for catnip.
these are only a handful of examples.
drugs are natural. chasing a high is natural. we literally have drugs, naturally, in our bodies. we chase dopamine. we chase serotonin. don't pretend you're not just as hooked as everyone else.
anti-drug people can't be respectful and normal about it for some fucking reason. they pretend it comes from a place of concern and care.
"you're killing yourself,"
"you're making yourself stupider,"
"you're taking the easy way out of your troubles,"
and? what does that have to do with YOU?
"i don't think i'm better than addicts, i just think they're (insert condescending remark)."
...hm?!
anybody could become addicted to drugs at any point. yes, even you, straight-edge. you could lose everything, land hard on your ass, no home, no food, and have literally no other way to get through the day. you could be severely injured, deal with chronic pain, and become addicted to painkillers without even realizing it. hell, you could end up in a bad situation like an abusive relationship where you're forced to partake.
you're not immune to failure. you're not immune to life beating you down to a pulp. it could happen at any fucking time.
do you know how easy it is to shut your mouth and say nothing when you clearly don't understand something? did you know it's okay to just not have an opinion on something that you're ignorant about?
did you know it's okay to have compassion for people who don't have it as good as you?
did you know that different doesn't mean bad?
i don't trust non-users. you don't treat addicts like humans. not everybody has a safety net. what's more, not everybody falls for the "purity" trap that you found yourself in.
drugs are fun. drugs make you feel good. why shouldn't we use them, if we want to?
"because you're killing yourself,"
"because you're making yourself stupider,"
"because you're taking the easy way out of your troubles,"
what does that have to do with you?
you're an animal, too. you have animal urges, too. deny it, kick and scream, throw your little tantrums, it won't change the truth. you are a member of the species Homo sapiens, in the kingdom Animalia. you are an animal, too. you are no better than me.
"my choice is what i choose to do
and if i'm causing no harm
it shouldn't bother you
your choice is who you choose to be
and if you're causin' no harm
then you're alright with me"
and if i'm causing no harm
it shouldn't bother you
your choice is who you choose to be
and if you're causin' no harm
then you're alright with me"

to deny that innate fastening of humans to habitual inebriation is to deny that we are animals.
though as someone who was long an addict, no one chooses to be one. it is not an issue of an instinctual tendency for self-destruction but represents a society that leaves room for addiction. it is born of struggle and insecurity, not a desire for harmful recreation.

Being against drugs and being against drug addicts are two very different stances that few understand. People don't get addicted to a substance because their life was going great.
I don't understand how people can think insulting a drug addict will help. If anything, the hatred makes them double down.
Blessed be.
