the glass octopus binomial name Vitreledonella richardi is in the phylum Mollusca their mantle length is about eleven centimeters and their total length is about forty five centimeters they are found in tropical and subtropical seas worldwide in the mesopelagic to the bathypelagic zones due to this reason encounters in the wild are extremely rare they are one of the most elusive sea creatures and are slow swimmers to save energy in their nutrient poor environment they have very distinct rectangular eyes the unique eye structure of their eyes helps it spot predators and prey from far away and its body also refracts light and uses its bioluminescent glow to also help it to camouflage and will stop moving when threatened them being opportunistic hunters it mainly preys on small fish, crustaceans, and Bivalves but will also eat jellyfish researchers also found that they lose their beaks when they get older they start with a strong beak to tear their preys flesh off and when they lose their beak it grows back softer more suited for soft-bodied prey to accommodate their changing diet and when this happens its believed the octopus moves up levels for their new diet they are currently least concerned
