album review || lovesick - the happy fits

lovesick is the newest album by new jersey band the happy fits, released on september 19th, 2025. despite being quite underground and indie, you may know the happy fits from a few things. one of their top songs, "dirty imbecile" has been on countless edgy spotify playlists next to songs like "better than me" by the brobecks and so many mother mother tracks. along with that their #1 song currently, "she wants me (to be loved)" was featured in a warrior cats animatic by youtuber peppermint-moss (how i found them :)). but lovesick is the focus of this bulletin, and i really hope you give the band a listen if you haven't!

i've been in heavy anticipation for this album since its announcement back in early 2025, and its been one i've been enjoying since it dropped. to show some appreciation for this band and this record, i've decided to write my thoughts on each track. the album goes in and out from solemn tunes to hyperactive melodies, with the latter being my favorite, but the soft songs are nice as well. my thoughts will be in album order, not ranked, for simplicity. i'm not a music reviewer so pls take my words with a grain of salt lmaoooo

1. "Do You See Me?" - this song was released as a single for the album in mid-august. it wasn't my favorite from the singles, as i prefer the faster songs, as stated before. but this song is a good opener, letting people understand what the tone of the album would be. with that said, i think another song on this list would have been a better opener.. we'll get to that one later :). the instrumentation is good, the vocals from the new band members (raina and nico) fit in neatly to the band's sound, and this song shows how well they work off of calvin's main vocals.

2. "Everything You Do" - the first single from the album, and this was an amazing choice for a first single. when this was released on may 1st, i was immediately obsessed, we were BACK after the hiatus, and this was my first THF release i got to anticipate (as i got into the band in late 2022, after the release of under the shade of green). this song is emblematic of everything i love about the happy fits, but is able to introduce new concepts with new members joining in. an amazing track over all.

3. "Cruel Power" - this was the band's second single from the album and.. they really treated us with back to back bangers, both single-wise and album-wise. this was genuinely my most played song from the only-singles era of this album. this song is just really catchy and hits all the right notes. this is definitely an ear-worm and something i love having on loop when i'm in the mood.

4. "Lovesick #1 (Misery)" - this was the song i was hinting at w/ my review of track one. this song starts off with a slow pace, with raina mullen taking the lead vocals in the beginning, and then explodes with a loud and energetic second half where the rest of the band joins, fully exploring how this album's going to go. i believe this is my favorite song off of the album in general. i hype ts up so much. i'm glad this song was left until the album's release, as this was such a sweet treat. i will never stop singing this song's praises (and singing it to myself as it plays). reasonably, i understand why this song wasn't the first song, as calvin's vocals are what most THF fans are used to. but it would have been nice. a girl can dream.

5. "The Nerve" - this song's title is a funny one, as it reminds me of a brobecks track off of violent things, also called "the nerve". this song's a fun, energetic one.. i even put it on a playlist about one of my doomed oc relationships. i don't have much to say about this one, except that i really enjoy it. i like the way the vocals are mixed a lot, especially in the chorus, and i like the harmonization around the last bridge.

6. "Miss You" - this song's pretty good, but my favorite part of this one's the bridge, especially with how "ten thousand words and marigolds, i'll find my way to you" is sung. don't have many notes, a pretty solid track.

7. "I Could Stare at You for Hours" - not really my type of song, even less than "do you see me". not a bad track at all, just not my style. the happy fits can do soft songs i like, just not this one. "relimerence" from concentrate is a better example of a slower song from their discography for example. i do like the swelling of the music, and i think instrumentally its extremely unique.

8. "Sarah's Song" - I LIKE THIS ONE!! not my favorite from the album, but i really like how this is laid out. very beatles-esque i feel... i'll have to ask my friend who loves the beatles about this one. but this one's just very lighthearted and i feel like i wanna skip around in the fields when listening to this. the whistling in the instrumental is sooo pleasing to the ear as well.

9. "Shake Me" - despite the lyrics feeling SO millennial (pls don't mention getting high while watching the office in your songs ever again pls /hj), i liked this one as well. the first verse did worry me, but the lyrics ended up being pretty good. i am especially in LOVE with this bridge, why is this band so good at making amazing bridges.

10. "I Still Think I Love You" - oh this one's really good, this one's great actually. the verse hooked me in, and the song definitely delivered throughout. the verses here are especially amazing, especially in terms of vocal cadence.

11. "Wild in Love" - another single from the album, coming right after "cruel power". that song, being amazing as it is, very much overshadowed this single in my mind for a while, up until the album actually released. but giving it a listen on the album made me enjoy this one a lot more. apparently this is one of the first songs that shows luke davis as a vocalist? i enjoy luke's vocals a lot! i enjoy whatever electronically they have going on when his vocals appear in the verses, especially verse 2.

12. "Black Hole" - the last of the released singles and this was definitely a good one to keep the anticipation of the album alive. this one's fun, i can tell calvin is having fun with his vocals here. i liked this when the single came out a good bit, but now i see it as a pretty good addition to the album. not a fave, but rlly good!

13. "Superior" - this one has to be my favorite mellow song on the album, as i feel like there's so many elements here that make this one amazing. "every song from your cd book burned in my throat" is such a good lyric oh my god. the vocals as well.. the music swelling up... this is amazing. also voice memos in songs make me feral (song for a guilty polyamorist by sixwing is a good example of this), and this song nails the ending voice memo to make this song wrap up amazingly.

14. "Wrong About Me" - this one's another amazing mellow song, i especially love the way this was sung. this song's lyrics are awfully heartbreaking. i won't spoil them. no more notes rlly

15. "I Remember" - the last song on the album, and the longest one clocking in at almost 6 minutes. i prefer the lyrics to this one over how it sounds. it sounds good, but again- not really my style. it does pick up in the latter half of the song, but again- i prefer the lyrics. these last three songs especially shine in the lyrics department.

overall, this album is definitely worth your listen, and i desperately urge you to check it out. i hope you enjoyed this huge yap
