Getting Into Goth
autoplay is seven kinds of sin by sad lovers & giants
Hello, my name's Vince and i've been Goth for about two years now... which is crazy because i'm 15 and I was a little baby getting into this... I think my age and me living with my parents still will hopefully make being Goth seem easier to accomplish, is what i'm trying to get at.
I also may be a little stupid because of that... so if I get things wrong regarding what genres are Goth or origin of Goth please correct me (cause honestly I don't care about the origins that much call me a faker or whatever... I don't care, but some people do!! so!! pls!)
also pssttt no Goth has to look the same as the ones who wear trad Goth makeup with big teased hair.. Ok?
This is me Hellooooo

FIRSTLY,
Goth is mostly a music subculture, there isn't any core beliefs or values that I am aware of like punk is, though, Goth is a subculture that is derived from punk so I'd say if you're looking for something to follow to be Goth or something, look at what punks believe in.
Like anyone can be Goth, but since it's from punk the people tend to be more progressive and left leaning. Overall, there is no philosophy that all goths adhere to.
WITH THAT BEING SAID some goths will try to tell you that you aren't "dressing Goth enough" or whatever bull crap thing they want to say, you are Goth if you listen to the music! So this is basically just how I dress which is more formal/vampire-ish and I know a lot of people are into that style.. as well as music recommendations.
MUSIC: GENRES
There isn't really a specific genre for Goth music, there is Gothic rock but Goth music isn't strictly that. Punk music is often associated with Goth, as well as...

FASHION
this is mostly a guide on what is typically seen in Goth outfits as well as where to find pieces, how to accessorize, layering, and perhaps some DIY? I will add that soon!
TYPICAL OUTFIT STAPLES: Black is a common color (duh)same with red and purple, but anything that is bright AND is also a washed out color is cool too, white Goth exists and I'm sure some people do like. idk orange or something YOU CAN DO THE WHOLE RAINBOW I DONT CARE!!
When I think of Goth outfits or really just Goth as a whole, I think of gothic literature so that leads me to think about vampires and werewolves and creatures of that sort, castles, labyrinths, horror, etc, so when picking an outfit I tend to wear something that reminds me of any of those.
Speaking of which, a lot of Goth people tend to dress vampiric, which means formal/fancy kind of wear. Think of button ups, vests, frills, lace, long skirts, dress pants.
I tend to wear maxi skirts that fit nicely and I usually pair it with a button up and a vest.
I also enjoy turtlenecks, and poofy sleeves, as well as shoulder pads and lace shawls.
Band shirts, low cut tops, tights (black, red, fishnet, or really anything), Leather, nice fitting jeans, corsets

LAYERING: Layering is super super duper important! It makes an outfit really come together and creates a silhouette too.
I really enjoy sheer tops and lace shawls, they're both see through and allow the rest of your outfit to shine through. I like tying lace shawls cause they make you snatched and vests do the same, those two are my favorite pieces.
Button ups under tops or turtle necks also make an outfit better, and sometimes I put a jacket over my fit like a leather jacket or you could use a dark one with pockets cause those look cool too, they make you look a little more boxy and every time I pair my leather jacket with one of my maxi shirts I feel like allison from breakfast club... and dats okay cause her outfit was really super cute.

^ Thats an old pic of me..from last year probably. I got rid of the lace top in a fit of dysphoria I'm so sad please come back noooo..
JEWELRY/ACCESSORIES: Rosaries are most common, i'd say get a few! Beaded necklaces too or any necklace with a chain. I have a blood vial necklace and a moon necklace from a witch museum, I wear both like every day.
I AM WARNING YOU, DON'T BUY JEWELRY FROM HOT TOPIC!!! OR SPENCERS!!! That shit will break on you within two weeks!! the quality is not worth it! Though, I think spirit halloween's quality is pretty okay, save for the silver finish rubbing off within a month but whatever.. my blood vial necklace has been in my possession for a year now and it's hanging on strong. I will talk about where to find things later.
Also belts are good accessories to have, you can have any belt really, I have a couple studded belts and a chain one, also get a lot of things with chains they are everything.
I like pearls and chokers too! I don't like spiked chokers but I like frilly ones a lot. I wear spiked bracelets though.
SHOES: Anything nice works, like Dr martens, heels, or platforms. Combat boots are good too. You can also just get away with converse.

WHERE TO SHOP:
THRIFTING IS YOUR BEST BET! It's good for the environment and it's generally much cheaper than buying things new. Most of my closet is thrifted, and i'm fortunate enough to live within walking distance of a thrift shop that sells items for less than two dollars.
Just look everywhere and you will find something awesome eventually, or know what pieces would be good for layering or as a base! Grandma clothes are really awesome too and there are a lot of those at thrift stores.
TBH I haven't bought anything Goth related at a store that wasn't a thrift store... i'm not the person to ask.. but for jewelry I GUESS Spencer's is okay i'd rather steal the stuff though cuz I'm not paying an arm and a leg for something that's gonna last me like 2 weeks
i'd rather thrift jewelry though, or if you have a very sharing grandma like I do, (I live with her and her closet is across my room) ask to share her clothes. I borrow her clothes all the time, my leather jacket isnt actually mine, its hers, among many other things. I also like to borrow her jewelry, hence where I get pearls from, besides claires. ALSO CLAIRES IS REALLY GOOD QUALITY SURPRISINGLY IF UR GONNA SHOP AT A MALL
Uhhmm that's it for now, I may add a DIY thing later but DIY isn't really a goth thing.. so that may just be a separate blog.
Please feel free to ask questions! Like, if you need something explained deeper or if you want styling help or.. literally anything!!! I will be happy to answer.
