me and my dear grandma went on our usual outing today, to our favourite local bookstore! They've got a few stores only in Australia - although I can't give away what store it was for privacy and safety reasons, I highly suggest supporting your local bookstore(s)!! there is no better feeling then browsing a bookstore filled with old books, dvds and cds, many of which you know someone once loved :) i will have to make a post eventually compiling all of the books i own soon! most are secondhand from our lovely local bookstore hehe
anyhoot, here's the haul!
pictured: Australian Marine life revised edition by Graham J. Edgar, two national geographic magazines from 2009 (ice baby and the tallest tree are their titles), and seasons 1-3 of Futurama along with i believe a special episode! woah.
always such a joy visiting the bookstore! I went in looking for a bbc documentary dvd set I had spotted a while back and passed on, but it seems someone has picked it up!
heres what i believe was the dvd set i saw, in case you're curious!
Although its unfortunate it's gone, I hope whoever has it enjoys it :D and, because I searched so hard for it, I ended up finding Futurama which I am very much content with!!!!! I remember vaguely watching Futurama when I was younger so I was excited when I saw not only it there, but all in the same place! For context, the store has no organisation for their dvds, and they're in two layers, often with some stacked on top which makes it very difficult to search for specific movies and shows. It was quite a find to spot it there!
pictured: my national geographic magazines! i unfortunately misplaced one of my magazines a few days ago :(
I almost always make sure to pick up a national geographic magazine when I go to the bookstore! In part to save them from people who use them for crafts (lightheartedly! its good to see them being used at least) but mostly because I enjoy reading them in the afternoons or when I wake up :D I highly recommend to anyone wanting to stop doomscrolling to start getting magazines!! They're a great replacement for doomscrolling, instead of wasting time watching things you won't be able to recall in a couple scrolls, grab a magazine of any kind! although it still feels passive, like doomscrolling, its way more productive and it forces you to slow down a little :) perfect for when you're feeling too tired to do anything, but too awake to not do anything!

I actually bought this book for school next year! Which is something I have been doing ALOT recently,, (referenced the Stephen Hawking book i still HAVE NOT FINISHED in my last math assignment). I am doing Marine Science along with 3 other sciences next year and I am unbelievably excited! I love science!!! I'm excited to start reading this book tonight :D It's organised the species by phlyum (AUGH I LOVE YOU TAXONOMY), with each phylum starting with a page explaining what that phylum is. IT EVEN HAS STUFF ON BACTERIA!!!! HELL YEAH!!!! It includes a phylogenetic tree aswell as a map in the front pages! I love when books includes diagrams in the front, it helps with understanding so much. Another book I have, The Rise and Reign of the Mammals (which i am yet to finish...), has something similar and I cannot tell you how many times I find myself going to reference it! I am so excited to rock up to my marine science class with this
Awesome haul! The taxonomy book especially looks like it's gonna be really cool to check out. The idea of using magazines instead of doomscrolling is a good one, I might take that advice :O
thank you >:D i went to the store again recently and got so much good stuff but i cant show them because they're gifts!!!!!! I read the book before I go to bed and I have been enjoying it :D made me realise just how much I don't know about microorganisms!!!! the joys of science... theres always more to learn! The magazines have worked so well for me, I absolutely love them!!! they sit underneath my tv hehe. They allow you to do something more passive without it being mindless, yknow? :D AND!! you get the bonus of them being like time capsules! I really enjoy the national geographic magazines, but i feel like you would enjoy old tech magazines hehhee!! stuff like how to survive the y2k bug and all that. im sure you would be able to find some on ebay, maybe the thrift or facebook marketplace if youre lucky!!!
Ooohh! A magazine about Y2K would be really cool! The whole technical side of it, and how it got blown out of proportion is really interesting! You know me too well lol. I'm probably going to the thrift sometime this week, so I'll definitely look :O A cool and somewhat related thrift find from a few months ago was a Brittanica almanac from my birth year, 2005! It goes over all the stuff that happened that year, from sports, to politics, to scientific discoveries! It's even got a CD-ROM enclosed to view the info on the computer if you want, which is really frickin cool! (Maybe one day I'll load it up!) Glad you're learning a lot from the book! That's what's so cool about science, we're STILL trying to make sense of the world, but what we've got so far is really cool! Seeing disproven theories and how things we consider true now came to be is really fun for me. And I hope the people who you got stuff for love their gifts!
Ooooh thats nice!! My grandparents live like a 5 minute bike ride away but i don't see them all that much purely because i dunno i don't have a reason to hang out with them other to chat or whatever so it just makes it a little awkward if i ask them if i could come around for no reason at all
OHHHH MY GOODNESSS THIS IS SO FREAKING COOLL!!!! first of all love the design and layout it is so gorgeous and very appealing!!!
omg seeing futurama reminded me of when I would watch the random episodes I would find on TV! I hope you enjoy reading it, I hadn't realised there was actually reading material of it! so thats pretty cool :p
the magazines look very nice also! especially the tallest tree, it's a gorgeous cover! magazines instead of doomscrolling sounds especially appealing honestly... I might snag that idea and try to implement it in my own life perhaps :]]
sucks that you missed out on the DVD set! here's hoping you find something similar one day 🙏🙏
and the book you got for school sounds like something you're really gonna enjoy so yippee!!! your excitement on science topics makes me want to get into science haha, hope you enjoy the read and your awesome science classes for next year!!!🙏🙏
THANK YOUU!! i had so much fun designing it :D really motivated me to make some more blogs hehehe!!
i caught some episodes on tv too :D part of me misses cable sometimes,, but then i remember drew gooden's video on how stupidly expensive it was for how much it is and i stop missing it HEHEHE
I KNOW RIGHT? i adore the cover and how it breaks the traditional template of their magazines :D you should implement it!!!! you can find plenty of old magazines at bookstores and op shops! i actually read comics and such aswell hehe! there was a simpsons comic i passed up on and ill forever regret it 3
thank you :D i might try and just order it off of ebay honestly :0 i think the copy they had was missing the front cover anyway, so its alright! :D
AUSTGJW IM HONOURED! I feel like more people should develop an interest in the natural world. there is nothing better then looking around and knowing the names of animals, and gettting to share that love and knowledge with people. my best advice for getting into the sciences is to watch youtube videoes honestly!!! research things you enjoy! i enjoy watching octopus lady, clintons reptiles, the backyard naturalist, lindsay nikole (honestly dont watch her as much anymore), and planet wild is a (reasomably and well deserved) popular one! do it as leisure yknow :)
thank you for you lovely comment! im sorry i replied so late D:
heck yeah, making & decorating blogs is so fun and I cannot wait to read more of your blogs!
I wish there was a site that shows all the old shows they used to air on TV, it would be so cool!
the op shop we have in the small town i go to often is quite small so I might have to go during a study block one day and check it out for magazines! awh, maybe you'll find the Simpson's comic again some day🤞
I'll check out those channels you mentioned for YouTube! there was something on TV the other day including a cool fun fact i loved about a Squid, which made me want to research about it! It was about a species (i cannot remembered which) that communicate via green lights on their body that are alongside the blue dots
and of course! you needn't apologise for responding late dont worry!!🫶
ah! how lovely !!!! this blog is such a cozy thing to read. its so nice to get books id imagine! how productive that you get national geographic magazines aswell !!! keep blogging! your stuff is so fun and kewl to read
aawwhh thank you so much <3 this is motivating me to start blogging more :D holding that you called my blog "cozy" close to my heart forever! i do find that after reading the national geographic magazines i do have more motivation to be productive! i highly recommend them to eveeeryone <3
i aDore your blog so much!! so cozy (ノ´ヮ`)ノ*: ・゚i’m a sucker for secondhand books however i haven’t been satisfied wiTh the lack of bookstores in my area (눈_눈) this motivated me to pull out articles of similar topics to the natgeo magazines u purchased !! ^_^
<33 thank you so much for your kind words! cozy is the highest form of compliment :D i actually really only visit one bookstore in my area, im unaware if there even is any others (i think there might be one other? but i believe they moved :0) me and my grandma almost always find ourselves browsing for 1 hour at least! always a wonderful thing to find a good bookstore :D i wish you the best of luck for finding your own! even if it is a bit of a trip away, at least it'll make visiting just that bit more special! although I'm a bit disgruntled about the direction natgeo is going in, i still love their stuff and so often find myself reading their online articles or watching their documentaries! glad to hear my blog motivated you to do so too <3
