Hello, my name is Kit. I'm writing this blog for those who would like to know about the ban of social media in Australia for people under 16's and my opinion on it.
So, for those who don't know, starting from December 10th, under 16's will not be permitted to use social media. The government was originally planning on making users reveal their IDs, which of course minors can get around that by using the ID of an adult, or even a fake ID, that also means in the case of a data leak, the ID is accessible to other people, which is quite unsafe as it could lead to identity theft. According to more recent news, the government, instead of forcing you to show ID, will be doing regular checks over your social media accounts to make sure that all accounts held by people under 16 are deactivated, this means when you do turn 16, you'll have to make a new account. The apps that are being banned (that I know of) are tiktok, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and possibly roblox, discord, and Pinterest (if this is wrong correct me in the comments).
I will now discuss my perspective on this ban. So, the government claims to be enforcing this ban in order to help with the online safety of minors, but wouldn't a better way to help with online safety be to talk about it and actually making sure that attackers and predators on the internet get punished? Another reason they're banning social media apps is because of 🌽ography (censored because idk how moderators will react) but wouldn't it be easier to just block 🌽 websites?? This social media ban will not work to help with online safety at all, and may even make it less safe, also, won't under 16s just find a way around the social media ban??
That's all for now!
Thank you for reading this far.

Mayday
This feels just like the Uk child safety act. It sounds good in theory but in reality it's just another tactic to give the government more control and normalize censorship
They don't care about safety they care about control
