‘It’s dark out tonight, Ferris.’ Remmi poked at the fire smouldering in front of them with a stick, he put out the charred end on the damp log which he had claimed as a seat. Overhead the stars were visible between the branches of a tree that had provided them shelter from the rain that morning.
‘Yeah man, no light pollution and crap.’ Ferris paused to look wistfully into the distance, searching for something. Maybe something like the gleaming metropolis that they had left behind in the 90s. Memory does wonderful things for horrible places.
‘I wish we brought like… s’mores or something,’ Ferris continued, ‘would’a made this night even better.’
Remmi turned to him, throwing his stick fully into the fire and crossing his legs on the log.
‘You know what I miss?’
‘What?’
‘Coffee.’ Remmi smiled, ‘I can barely think! I’m getting caffeine withdrawals, dude!’
Ferris laughed, ‘I could do with a root beer. Honestly if we made it into a proper town here I reckon we could find both.’
‘And s’mores?’
‘Probable not s’mores.’
Remmi smiled, ‘could we really? Head into town? Find something worth our time?’
Even if they couldn’t, Ferris thought, he would invent it. Just for Remmi.
‘Totally, just trust me Remmi.’
