I have watched all the tv shows listed below or have at least read the source material and there are a lot of things I haven't watched.
Ai Yazawa:
1. Nana
They're doing a collab with Vivienne Westwood. The story is phenomenal along with the fits. So the main fashion inspiration is mainly 90s punk with pretty much every single character you care about. The exception to these rules are Hachi, her sister, Junko, and Misato. Hachi's style changes based off her era, her sister is ganguro gyaru, and Junko with "afro-centric" style. This was made in the 90s and at the time it was popular for alt Japanese communities back then to wear african styles. However I've found some sources that say she's mixed (half Japanese half African) but there's no proof. That's really my one gripe with the fashion because I wish we knew more about Junko like if she is mixed which African culture she takes fashion inspiration from. If she's not whether or not it's appropriation isn't my place to say. I watched a video by Lisa Fevral to determine what exact subculture of Lolita Misato is and according to Lisa's friend it's a mix between casual and old school.
2. Paradise Kiss
I don't like the story all that much but tons of other people do. They did have good lgbtq representation. From what I remember they had a positive representation of trans character which is rare from those days and, while I don't like this character, a positive representation of a bisexual character. The fashion is amazing and I would even argue better than Nana's. The characters all dress alt but they're all different subcultures with some overlap. Glam-rock fashion seems to run through all their clothing choices but Arashi is more punk and visual kei, George incorporates elements of dandyism into his mainly British glam-rock style, Miwako incorporates lolita and fairy kei fashion (can't figure out the type), and Isabella incorporates aristocratic Victorian styles but sleeker. Yukari, the main character, is exploring her identity so her style shifts between many alt subcultures' fashions. Once again, Lisa Fevral helped with this analysis.
3. Neighborhood Story
I have not watched the show but I have read most of the manga. I like it except for one thing, which is Mariko's brother's fashion choices. Similar to Junko's except he's confirmed fully Japanese. Some say it's appropriation others say it was one of the only positive representations of anything black in Japanese media at the time. I'm not educated enough on the subject to make a decision. Everyone has a different fashion style so Imma keep this brief. Mikako Kouda, the main character, likes vivid colors, eclectic patterns, and accessorizing. Her outfits are generally more figure hugging than baggy but she still experiments in a way that fits her style. Risa is punk rock. Mai Oota dresses in Lolita style clothing, I believe it's old school but I might be wrong. Mariko Nakasu dresses old money but back when that was 90s chanel. Tsutomu, based off what I found, dresses in the retro futuristic style (like what they thought future fashion looked like in the 90s) but he also mirrors Mikako's love for vibrant colors and flip flops between tighter and baggier outfits. Ayumi Oikawa dresses a lot more basic but leans into the whole art kid thing. I'm not sure what Tashiro's style is called but it's definitely relaxed and baggy. Jiro is punk.
Modern Shows:
1. Jojo's bizzare adventure
Every part is a new time period and Hirohiko Araki really popped off creating the outfits. While part 1 and part 2 both have good fits, it really starts getting good at part 3. For the girlies part 6 and beyond is the prime inspiration time when Hirohiko Araki figured out how to write women. I can't even really say definitive if there's a cohesive style it's really a genre of it's own.
2. Winx
Y2k. It's so y2k and amazing. Ignore the new show and season 8 focus on the original. It's been awhile so some of what I say may be wrong because I'm just looking at photos. Bloom is generally more trendy, she loved a stomach cutout and as the seasons went on she liked frills too. Her color is blue and yellow (blue and pink at the later seasons). Stella mixes trends with experimental high fashion. Her main color is orange and green. Flora is more earthy and frilly with her outfits, almost hippie-like but with tighter silhouettes. Her main colors are pink and green. Musa is the resident tomboy of the group, often leaning towards baggier and more street-wear stuff. This was erased in the later seasons unfortunately into something more generic. Her main colors are red and blue. Tecna is more laid back and y2k futuristic. Her main colors are purple and green. Aisha's style name is escaping me at the moment but it's a lot of cropped tank tops/tank top silhouettes but a different material and cargo pants/skirts. Aisha's colors are green and pink/lilac. All the men wear what was popular for men at the time and also the 80s.
3. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
90s fashion in a time capsule. The only really distinct style apart from styling choices is Willow's who leaned more into the witchy new age fashion, Faith Lehane's who's style was kinda like Aisha's from winx, and the vampires who were all alt (especially Spike and Drucilla). I suppose Giles dressed like a librarian the whole time which was pretty different from the rest of the cast.
4. The Vampire Diaries
This was my tween show, I hated Elena. In general the fashion was alright. It's a 2010s time capsule for fashion and while I don't like that style in general I like most of it. I may hate Elena, but her fashion was the best in the show along with Katherine's (who I love). Caroline had her moments and unfortunately the show wasted Bonnie's potential. I wouldn't watch this show because many of the production crew are racist and sexist along with the cast even though (most of) the cast deserves the love. Searching up photos on pinterest should be enough.
5. The Nanny
There's a reason why Fran Fine went viral, it's because her style is amazing. CC has some good moments too but Fran Fine has clothing people go to war for. Fran mainly wears a mini skirt and a fabulous top in a 90s way but when she puts on a full length dress she puts on the most flattering 10/10 thing every single time. Just search her up on pinterest trust me. She also has a coat collection like chanel skirt suit inspired coats (because they're not tweed most of the time) or a fur lined one.
6. Friends
All the girlies do it right. We all know this. Also I hate Ross. 90s time capsule fashion but simpler than buffy's because they're adults and for adults who may or may not be boring but Phoebe's outfits are underrated.
7. Dandadan
I cannot recommend this show because the fan-service is insane in episode 1 and episode 9. It's not sexist, both the underage girls and guys get treated to it, and it's not as present in season 2 except for one character. I will say the fan-service is never meant to be sexy but it's still sometimes there for obvious reasons. To be clear, my policy on fan-service is no underage characters and as long as it's done tastefully like with Seiko. Also the plot is crazy but I enjoy it. The main character, Momo Ayase, is a gyaru, specifically kogal. Her friends are gyaru too, one of them is kogal like her and the other is ganguro I believe. Okarun, love him, is in the process of developing drip. Jiji wears streetwear (ish) fits. Seiko wears granny fits. Aira wears her school uniform most of the time and when she's not she's wearing a perfectly styled sweater or coat.
Period Pieces:
1. Queens Gambit
60s fashion. No real competition with Beth Harmon because she isolates herself. Beth mainly wears boxy patterned mini dresses, boxy top and tight bottom with a shirt and skirt, and the best full length wool coat you'll ever see. When she wears pants they're usually flowy at the bottom and a bit baggier at the top but it's not every time.
2. Bridgerton
Is it accurate? No. Is it kinda good? Yes. It's regency inspired, heavy on the inspired, and plays with fabric very well. The spin off show is included in this except the period is the late 1700s I believe. Daphne is trendy with the times, Eloise dresses more conservatively and is really the most fashion inspiration you can take apart from the featheringtons who are gaudy. Penelope Featherington starts out gaudy but moves towards more elegant styles which is good for plus-size fashion
3. Pride and Prejudice (1990s)
If you want classic regency fashion it's here. The story is great, acting is great, and fashion, tripple whammy.
