Why the modern gaming industry sucks (A rant about Sega, X box, Sony, and Nintendo)
Please read my words carefully before commenting.
Chapter 1: Nintendo and licencing.
With the release of the switch 2 in April, and the change in the terms of service for Switch products (eShop bought games, and consoles.) I felt the need to talk about this.
As you all know, Nintendo changed their terms of use in May 2025. If you own a eShop bought game, or a Switch one, or two, you no longer own your rightfully bought items. You only own the licence to play those eShop bought games, or play on your Switch two.
And, if you brake one of these rules, Nintendo will brick your Switch.
Here are all the sections that mention licencing/bricking your Switch:
Section 2 (License) clarifies that Nintendo services are licensed and not sold to you and includes additional restrictions on how those services may be used.
Section 7 (Shopping Services; Rewards Program; Online Subscription Services) and our Purchase and Subscription Terms link to our policies on Returns & Exchanges.
I recommend reading all of these sections in full by yourself after reading this blog.
Other companies, like Sony have hinted at following in the footsteps of Nintendo with their new concept of the Playstation 6 announcement, and so far, the future of the console world is not looking good.
Not to mention, physical copies of games are slowly dying due to the lack of people buying them, and the amount of money it takes to make them.
Nintendo has also recently banned a person's account due to their sister naming her account "Twink Link." Nintendo apparently hates twinks. Due to this, nintendo's sales have been slowing down gradually, but what other gaming companies should we turn towards?
People have been saying Xbox's new console will save the industy, and honestly? I disagree.
Chapter 2: Nostalgia and it's relationship w/ gaming. (Mainly about Sega, X box, and Sony)
As some of you may know, Sega has recently teased their new line of "revived" games. If you have seen the trailer, it looks like shit.
Here is the list of games they are making reboots/remakes/new games for:
Jet set radio
Crazy taxi
Shinobi
Golden Axe
Streets of rage
All of these games are from the 90's and 00's. Which, both decades are in the nostalgia era currently. And if I'm being honest, the trailer for all these games just looks like every game on the market now a days.
Especially jet set radio (If u couldn't tell from my PFP, I AM A JSR SUPER FAN..)
The new JSR just looks like a rip of Splatoon, I love Splatoon, but JSR had it's own look that Splatoon was inspired by.
The trailer makes it clear that these games are just rushed nostalgia bait reboots that Sega is churning out because they have been trying to revive sonic in some meaningful way for the past ten years. Not to mention, due to the sonic team taking up most of the console section of Sega, the JSR reboot is being worked on by the mobile division of Sega, who doesn't know shit about making console games. The new JSR and crazy taxi is being worked on by the same people that make project sekai (Which, to be honest, is a mediocre game.)
Meanwhile, at Sony, they make ten remasters of the same fucking game (I'm looking at you... the last of us.) Which, is just fueling the idea that we will not have any original ideas come out of any major gaming company, including Xbox.
I will admit, the new Xbox concept looks impressive, I don't have much to say about it besides I will be buying it, and I will not be buying the Playstation 6 due to how bad the PS5 gen was.
Chapter 3: Sega does what nintendon't
Sega is trying to bring back the "Sega does what nintendon't (Due to the success of sonic racing crosswords, and the amount of criticism towards Mario kart world.)
But the thing is, Sega doesn't make consoles anymore, their last console, the Dreamcast, was such a failure, it lasted three years.
Sega literally relies on Nintendo (along with X box/Microsoft, and sony)
So if Nintendo gets even slightly pissed at Sega for this, goodbye to new Sega games.
I say this because most people who play modern Sega games play them on a switch (I have meant not a single person who plays a Sega game on an Xbox.) opposed to a Playstation or Xbox.
This is also because Sony and Xbox don't announce Sega games like Nintendo does. Nintendo usually announces new Sega games at the Nintendo direct. It is a huge risk for Sega to bring back the genesis/master system era of Sega does what nintendon't...
Not to mention, nintendo in recent times is doing what Sega don't. Nintendo at least makes and updates their games other than Mario. The only things Sega has been active on is Sonic and persona (And the vocaloid games.)
chapter 4: Conclusion
Well, I honestly am not the biggest fan of how this blog turned out, but nonetheless... I must conclude it before my brain explodes of anger. I might make a part two on this, but I'm honestly just annoyed at the state of things now. Anyways... I'll see u all in a future blog!!! <3
Also, ppl, if you have nothing productive to say other than "I hate Nintendo" Please don't leave a comment. I would prefer this comment section be a discussion about the gaming industry or games, Thanks <3
I didn’t know anything about the big game corporations or about the branding. I mostly just saw a game that looked cool then played it if I could afford it then stopped if it was boring. I actually learned a lot for this and it was interesting to learn about everybody’s opinions so thank you<3
The only console I've ever owned was a Nintendo Wii. I've wanted to have others in the past after seeing my friends with their Xboxes and stuff, but currently I think it's not that worth it anymore. Kinda miss the time when I could go to a bookstore and find CDs with games to play and learn... *Hugs physical copy of The Sims 4*
I'm not really a gamer at all, I just enjoy playing the games I find accessible So like, as someone who's pretty attached to Project Sekai right now, I kinda wanted to know why do you think it's mediocre
Cuz like, besides from the fact it's clearly a cash grab like many other mobile games, the game is pretty much good for its rhythm game and story mode. The story has some flaws, mostly related to things being either rushed, extended, ignored or "saved up for later" just so they can get the story to match how they focus on characters for each event, since I feel that's what usually messes up the writing. But other than that, I feel like most of the characters represent properly what they want or are supposed to represent. Some characters like Tsukasa are really interesting with how his themes are hidden between the lines and it's really cool to find out his layers by yourself. Some characters like Mizuki can be really hard to understand for people who can't relate to her feelings because she appears contradicting or blind at times, despite usually acting like the group's mediator. But as a Mizuki kin I can tell why she acts the way she does since it really reflexes me. The rhythm game is really cool too. Maybe I'm just bad at the game, but I don't feel like it's really easy to progress from normal level modes to harder level modes, but as someone who usually plays on hard mode, I find cool how expert levels from 21-25 are easier for me to play, which prevents me from getting discouraged as someone who's very likely to quit any game when they feel they can't progress I feel like the gacha is absolutely bad. But since I'm not particularly fascinated by the gacha and it's not what makes me want to play project sekai, I feel like I can ignore it at a certain degree. I don't really feel like I need to pull just because there's pretty cards so like yeah yk idc. As long as I have good ap lockers and life recovery cards I'm okay I don't feel like the gacha really affects the quality of the rest of the game? Since it's like an aspect you can ignore unless you really want to collect your favorite characters. But I would get it if you find it uncool lol
Anyways, sorry for rambling!! I think I just thought of this as an opportunity I would still like your opinion about it, cuz I find interesting having different insights from people who may enjoy videogames in a different way than me
I totally need to make a whole ass blog on this LMAO.
Rlly I just find it poorly designed. It's also just a bit too easy for me (But that's mainly because I have been playing rhythm games all my life lol), I also find it to be a rushed game made by SEGA, when Sega can do much better. I have no problems w/ the story, nor do I vocaloid, I LOVE VOCALOID (Or any v synth software.) And the rhythm game part is fun when I just want to shut my brain off and relax, but usually I don't like games like that.
I think I might be looking forward for a blog about it :D (Ofc it's not like u have to do one tho hehe!!) To be honest, I usually forget about the fact it's made by a large company I think it's true the game can feel pretty rushed at times, so I get what you mean by them having to do better about it :3
as a Nintendo fangirl, I hate the way the company is carried on recently. ofc I have to mention the GOD DAMN PRICES and complain about their update in their terms of service, it's just a thing so from EA it's just disgusting. I miss Iwata so damn much, not only on the company, but in the whole videogame industry, as a figure that declared himself as a gamer, and not a business man like the actual Nintendo's president and many CEO's from the industry.
i love nintendo since i was born, the iwata era was "great" (only for the consumer, not for the company) but, for example the high prices and, especially how the prices mantain for AGES were all Iwata ideas -("After a piece of hardware is released, the price is gradually reduced for five years until demand has run its course. But since the demand cycle never fails, why bother reducing the price this way? My personal take on the situation is that if you lower the price over time, the manufacturer is conditioning the customer to wait for a better deal, something I've always thought to be a strange approach. Of course, this doesn't mean that I'm against lowering prices entirely, but I've always wanted to avoid a situation where the first people to step up and support us feel punished for paying top dollar, grumbling, "I guess this is the price I pay for being first in line."") which he makes a great point, but for me its undermined by the high prices
This is another reason why I'm glad I have the original DS on my Christmas wishlist instead of the stupid Switch 1 or 2. If I have to pay for it, then I'd better fucking have unlimited access to whatever I've shelled my money out for in the first place.
Plus, there are plenty of cool sounding GBA and Nintendo DS games I'd like to try out for myself anyways.
I, too, have mostly switched to PC. I have a collection of old consoles (PS3, Xbox 360, etc with plans to get more) and a Series X. I mostly use the Series X for games I can't run on my PC yet.. like Cyberpunk and Gta 6 when that drops. I'm just not big into console gaming like I used to be, at least with modern consoles. They dropped the aesthetics and added in all these ridiculous rules which made everything feel corporate. The innovation also just isn't there anymore, but the same could be said about a ton of industries these days if not every one. You bring up very valid points, though! Nintendo is so far gone now it's not even funny, I would love it if Sega tried their hand at making game consoles again. Now would be an ideal time. Could you imagine playing the new Crazy Taxi game on a new Sega console? That would be insane!
I gave up on consoles long ago. A PC, a USB controller, an SSD (1TB is enough for most people, if you have a lot of games get >=2TB), a torrent client, and an internet connection is all you need. Just pirate everything.
The only reason I have played JSRF is bc I pirated it LMAO. Same thing with the first Parappa game. Problem is I only have a Chromebook, so pirating can be difficult for me.
You should get an old optiplex because they're cheap and with a gpu are good gaming machines (you can still play a lot of great games without one), then you can play/pirate all da games. I got mine for $40.
Nintendo's behavior with raising prices, patents and attempted patents, as well as bricking people's switches makes my blood boil. Grew up with their games as a child; like so many others. I never thought I would ever want to see the day where this company goes under. I just think it is awful at the way they bully other game devs and their own consumers. : (
Did you see the announcement for Palfarm? I will definitely be supporting Pockepair- one of the developers who Nintendo has had lawsuits against. Not to just stick it to Nintendo, but honestly the game genuinely looks good.
I mean, I'm glad that sega is actually trying to give sonic a chance again, and for the most part they are succeeding. But I still don't trust companies in general to make good things... specially in today's climate of mindlessly riding nostalgia waves. When it comes to JSR, honest to god? I got a lot more faith in the sequel to Bombrush Cyrberfunk, Hyperfunk, which the team recently announced on their twitter.
Sega modernized the style a bit too much, and honestly, I don't think *not* modernizing to an aggressive extent is even an option for them either. These companies have grown way too much for their own good, to the point they can't afford to really experiment or deviate from modern expectations without repercussions. Consumers are also to blame, cuz they keep buying their shit and want to be served the same thing they've gotten from other games. It feeds the cycle, and it even bleeds into the indie scene as well. Both companies & consumers should change how they make and consume content.
Honestly, I also have more faith in Hyperfunk than I do JSR3. I honestly am guilty to buying game I know are mindless nostalgia bait, and I will be buying the new JSR, maybe it will be good. The other Sega games though? I have no hope for.
Ah yeah, totally. I'm also open to playing JSR3, I hope the controls are better than the original game (I haven't tried Future yet so idk how that one controls). If anything, even if the style might not land, there can still be a fun game underlying it, kind of like the recent fiasco with the skate. game. The most popular opinion I read about that game is that it's super sanitized and bland for a skating game, but the mechanics are actually fun. I'm sorta expecting that to happen with the newest JSR, might be a lil bland but still be fun to play. Who knows.
