hello gang! we're back with another entry.. once again, the housekeeping rules i stated last post still apply.. these are my personal opinions, it's okay to disagree! and i'm gonna keep talking like you've seen 'em. alrighty, let's get started!
this week's episodes were...
day 1 - treehouse of horror IX
- hell toupée: i got to watch this episode with both a friend and my dad and the way my friend got so excited when snake came on-screen he had to pause. not to put him on blast but happy pride to him. anyways. i like this one! it's a very silly concept which i live for.. there's some great jokes in this one, i'm tickled by the deeply agonizing incompetence of chief wiggum (not exclusive to this episode but yaknow), i like how long it takes for that stupid toupée to die.. idk what else to tell ya... it's good..
- the terror of tiny toon: this ones quite silly :) i enjoy a good cartoon moment, i mean the simpsons, is a cartoon but, you know what i mean... cartoon within cartoon bits.. friendly fire so to speak... i also enjoy a lisa and bart shenanigan personally, yuh.. also wanted to mention - at the "that means you have to get neutered" bit, my dad said he liked how they zoomed in with the funny closing circle thingy (paraphrasing, as you may have guessed) and my friend said, and i quote, "HIS BALLS??"
- starship poopers: this one is also very silly, all around a quite silly treehouse of horror, i enjoy, i love "maggie lost her baby legs" and the general nonchalance at first around maggie having tentacles and shit is so funny to me, also bare minimum but i appreciate that the affair in question wasn't like, actually weird, and the joke was that everyone involved was acting like it was a more realistic affair even though it was in actuality quite goofy.. i don't know just thought that was a good move, both from a tonal and humour standpoint :P
also adding an occasional favourite gag credit section! today's favourite is: yank my area (hank azaria)... crazy work
day 2 - treehouse of horror X
- i know what you diddly-iddly-did: this is one of those ones i don't tend to choose on casual rewatches, but it's still neat! i think the mood set in some scenes with the colours, music, animation, etc. is really cool! homer whispering to ned's body was both silly and also like, kind of genuinely unsettling, thanks to dan castellaneta's great performance as always.. and the scene where homer tries to fake the circumstances of ned's death are quite grimly funny to me.. my girl maude can't catch a break... also i think the werewolf reveal is both kind of sensible and also complete nonsense in a way that fits right in to thoh, and also ned's speed walk is funny
- desperately xeeking xena: so this ones, fine, lol, admittedly i'm not very familiar with xena (though maybe i should be from what i've read.. happy pride), so i'm sure some of the lustre of this one is lost on me, but even still, they've done segments based on other media before that i enjoyed plenty despite not having seen the source material? idk, i'm sure it's a mix of things, some of the humour in this one is just not for me.. not that i hated every single joke or anything, it's just that none really stood out to me, like i wanted to mention one i liked and i know i did like some, but i just, couldn't remember any, so, not sure what to tell ya.. i do enjoy the classic superhero show stylings, like with the little title/in-between cards, and i liked how lucy lawless was drawn a lot, i know it's just her in the xena armour but like, idk i thought they did a good job doing it in the simpsons style :) also very tickled by the idea that real life lucy lawless can fly, also! random animation error i've noticed, when comic book guy pulls out the lightsaber and lucy says it's been removed from the original packaging, her lips go from pink to red for a few frames intermittently :0 just thought that was interesting
- life's a glitch and then you die: period piece! it's about y2k babey B-) i reference "oh no, it's happening..." frequently, and i've made it clear to my friends that when i say that i want them to picture me as that news anchor, with my flesh falling off my metal bones... i like the wackiness of the premise, clearly inspired by the sort of panic around y2k at the time. also everything having a microchip in it... oh haha... hahaha.... yeah.. oh get ready... anyways, i also really like the lighting effects in the church, and when homer gives marge the razor you can see lisa and bart holding hands with maggie and i think that is just so cute i love my kids i mean their kids, anyways.. the last bit with homer and bart in the rocket was, probably funny for some people at the time? celebrity humour isn't always my favourite anyways, but in this particular instance i'm also several years removed from when these jokes were relevant, ya know? like i know some of these names, it's just that i'm not really familiar with that era of their careers (nor their careers in present day to be honest) so, a lot is lost on me that maybe would've made it funnier to me? unsure
was very tickled by the 'grat moaning' (matt groening) credit, i implore you to read the gag credits on thoh episodes, there's some great ones
day 3 - treehouse of horror XI
- g-g-ghost d-d-dad: the way when this came on it took me a second to remember which one this was and the way that when i sat down to write this i could not remember what segment was first in this episode (it's this one), anyways all this to say slightly embarassing but also maybe an indication of the memorability of this one lol.. also, i always forget that this segment is in this episode? like time wise? i don't know why but i always think of it as being a later one. anyways, it's like, fine, it's not bad or anything, there's some funny bits, i like the set up a lot and homer just going through it in the most homer way possible, otherwise there's not much to write home about, apologies!
- scary tales can come true: i love a fairytale based concept (wow rwby fan likes fairytale based things what a surprise) so this is a neat premise to me :) otherwise its, also fine, again there's some funny bits in there, like "you threw our precious babies into the woods?? we could have sold them!" and goldilocks getting mauled by the bears good lord, i also liked the vaguely medieval garbs i think they're cute
- night of the dolphin: my gf is jokingly anti dolphin so hey girl if you're reading this i hope you feel vindicated by this episode, anyways conceptually hilarious to me, the shot of a shitload of dolphins standing outside of the townhall (which i believe is based on the birds?), deeply funny to me, also my dad suggested we watch the birds, anyways otherwise also fine, not much to say here either sorry...
day 4 - treehouse of horror XII
- hex and the city: okay i'm gonna be real i strongly Dislike this one, there are too many slurs and also it's not fun nor that funny to me, probably on account of the slurs.. to be like, slightly devil's advocate, i understand that at the time (and honestly now too :/) people thought it was just an acceptable, neutral term.. that doesn't mean i have to like it though. even besides that i just don't really like this one, there's seedlings of some interesting stuff but all the ignorance behind it really turns me off. sorry.
- house of wacks: a neat concept, à la space odyssey, à la smart house, à la barbie: life in the dreamhouse, you understand this.. the robot house is genuinely creepy at times, which is the point. there's some funny bits here and there, i liked homer asking lisa to cut him some slack because the back of his head was missing, that's pretty funny, otherwise not much else to add sorry lol
- wiz kids: it's. fine. i don't like the original work this is based on anymore so i don't really have much praise for the concept, sorry :/ i know it was getting popular at the time and the author was not as publicly awful so, like, different context, but ya know.. anyways there's a surprising amount of body horror in here i tend to forget, like the horrible frog creature in constant agony, or slithers (Snake Smithers...) eating mr. burns.. slightly funny.. otherwise not much to say, i like bart and lisa making up, that was sweet (i love my kids)
- send in the clones: the concept of a hammock man, like an ice cream man, coming by regularly in the summer, is funny to me, and that is the point, good job the simpsons. anyways, this is quite a silly one and i am not opposed to the silly as you may have guessed... there's some fun bits, i love how earnest the homer clone looks while listening to grandpa, i love the homer clone beating up the car for no reason and bart's fantastic "me not notice" line, which got a kick out of my friend and i'm sure my dad would appreciate.. i also like the specificity of "23" being a clear tell of something being up, but also just being like, the sort of weird specification homer would provide for no reason, also the inverse of the inexplicable "i'm in the kitchen, homer..." from marge in the first thoh, clone homer's "good news!" actually makes sense for him to have said, so that's neato!
- the fright to creep and scare harms: i don't think i've ever really noticed that goldie's headstone was made of cardboard that's quite cute :( also i never quite understood why lisa called william her friend, she does not know this guy?? bit funny.. anyways, this is another one of those ones i tend not to remember until i rewatch it, but i'm not super sure why, it's fun! cowboys coming back from the dead?? awesome premise .. i love the simpson family's little ditty, i love how crazy styles marge goes on the fiddle while she's just conversing normally with homer.. that's quite funny... yah, a solid one i think :P
- the island of dr. hibbert: also quite a wacky premise, i enjoy.. i'm sure people have.. special feelings for cat marge.. i mostly think she really reminds me of bagi.. like from bagi: the monster of mighty nature (which i haven't actually seen in full btw, perhaps i should..), maybe served as inspiration? idk, would be cool :p also some of the designs are like, kind of cute? a lot are slightly hideous which is the point i'm sure, but like, anteater maggie was kinda cute, so was disco shrew, that could just be an actual furry design i feel like.. yah.. no i will not talk about the sex thing, because frankly i don't actually have much of an opinion on it, sorry :p
- reaper madness: this ones fun! i like the general concept of the grim reaper being like, the santa clause rules, also the earnestness of "i liked doug.." is great, also the idea of god being an old rich guy is an amusing idea to me, which pops up in a few treehouse of horrors if i recall correctly? so that's fun. also my dad pointed out that homer killed a priest i think? i did not notice this, but i choose to believe him.. fricked up.. ALSO super grim but i was always tickled by "aw you miserable bastard!" "that's why i'm up here." sorry moe but that's funny i hope you seek help <3
- frinkenstein: a very goofy concept to me, which again, i take no issue with.. love a goofy concept.. not all of the jokes landed for me, but it was still neat idk. i do occasionally reference "you know, dr. herschbach, our jobs are actually not that different." "i disagree.", pretty funny.. also enjoyed the random secrets of the universe that frink sr. spouted, like "the pyramids were actually made by sears....", super silly and fantastically delivered. thanks jerry lewis! also when frink sr. walks into the nobel prize awards ceremony and he shouts "not anymore, son!", it's another instance where you can hear the va standing further back in the room :0 again just a neat thing i noticed! unsure about the hiphop awards joke though hey whats going on...
- stop the world, i want to goof off: not particularly spooky, but still a silly idea for a segment.. it's pretty straightforward (for a thoh anyway..) in a way that like, isn't bad, it's just fine yaknow? i weirdly don't have much to add to this one otherwise? again i love bart, and i like milhouse a lot too, and they're the main characters in this one so... idk.. i am amused by the implication that milhouse would start balding at 25 though, oh buddy... i like the randomness of homer's head falling off?? unsure why thats happening. very amusing. also marge's enthusiasm for tossing the old comics is very charming to me, and also i am tickled by the randomness of the hula hooping thing.. i am not immune to random = funny.
- the ned zone: i quite like this one! it's a really fun concept and i think ned was a good choice of a character to bestow this upon. i have no ill-will towards ned, i just think it's fun to watch him break.. many such cases. it's pretty grimly silly, which i think is a good tone to have in these generally.. some of the jokes are a little predictable to me, but i don't really mind? idk it doesn't feel like, vapid or anything in the way it goes about things yaknow? just kind of a fun, perhaps simple, romp. also i am quite tickled by how absurd homer's death was, 'tis funny..
- four beheadings and a funeral: i love the hilariously fake british accents.. the first bit in particular really tickles me i've noticed, lisa's "what cluuues has the body shouuuwn?" is very silly to me, the earnestness of bart's "a doorknob! good show!" is great, i've also always loved marge's "?? blimey skip to me loo!" or whatever it is she says?? not a clue but i love it.. also another instance of unfortunate but real incompetence of wiggum.. and also maliciousness, that too.. which is the point. unsure how to feel about the. opium den. hm. i get the impression part of the joke is that like, hey this is stereotypical! laugh! but like that's it.. no further commentary.. it's the 2000s-ism of it all i guess. the idiocracy swag if you will. sigh. otherwise a fun setting! also i like lisa and marge's outfits a lot, as well as the working girls' outfits, they're very cute :)
- in the belly of the boss: boy they like their body horror in this era, huh.. not that it's new nor that i have an issue with it, again i love the credits in treehouse of horror V. anywho, bit silly this one.. not much else to write home about, it's got some funny bits, like "...well, that hurt like hell." also maggie is very cute, therefore she has a writing invisibility shield and shan't be harmed and i will not complain about this. also the dance sequence is. admittedly. pretty funny. once again, not immune to random = funny.
- b.i. bartificial intelligence: apparently my dad saw the original movie in theatres! i am three years old so i did not. but maybe i'll watch it sometime! anyways this ones, fine. lol. i really like the animation on bart when he wakes up in the hospital, it's really expressive! i've probably brought up character animation a couple times now. i like character animation can you tell. anyways, there's some amusing bits here and there, i forgot that's how the segment concludes also?? so jarring lmao?? which is the point, but idk, doesn't quite hit the same to me as some of the other twists like that do..
- survival of the fattest: a really fun premise, but i feel like it was lacking in execution? like, i consistently forget this segment exists, like a baby playing peekaboo.. if this isn't playing right in front of me, it's not there. so. good sign. idk, there's a couple amusing jokes i'm sure.. i just.. don't remember them right now.. so again good sign.. idk. it's like, fine. it's there. happy pride to lenny and carl btw.
- i've grown a costume on your face: this one is also quite a fun premise, but again just very meh to me in execution. i feel like it's paced kinda weird too? like they didn't really know how to fill out the rest of the segment?? so they were like, fuck it, squeeze all the actual being your costume stuff into a couple quick scenes and then have a long bit about adult illiteracy... which again, i like random shit like that, but idk this just did not hit for me either.
and that's all for this week!
sorry my reviews get progressively less glowing and therefore less enthusiastic ( ╥ω╥ ) such is the way i suppose.. i don't wanna compromise honesty, so i'll continue to be frank about my thoughts, but i'll also try to throw in some more positive comments too! also i've been getting more and more busy (particularly this week) so apologies for a slightly late posting of this week's thoughts, as well as any repetitiveness in this post! i'm. a bit tired. and i thought i was healing up from my cold, but it seems to have come back now so.. oops.. anywho, i hope you have a great day, thank you so much for reading if you did :) and i'll see you guys next week! ~☆
