New Home, New Laptop, New Life Ahead...

In my 1-month-long marathon of not posting anything in my blog, some stuff has changed in my life. Most importantly, I have finally managed to migrate to Ireland with my aunt and uncle. Let me tell you everything in detail.

Around July, I received a call from my father. He has said my aunt and uncle are able to pick me up for living in Ireland, providing me with a room under a roof, fooding, and warmth. He gave two main reasons for this: to escape the country of Ukraine before the government gets my ass into the east battlefield & to get a better educational degree and, potentially, future job and living. An important decision has to be made. Since I am physically and mentally incapable of providing any service on the battlefield and I am interested in having an IT-related job, I have decided to accept it. Besides that, it would be an awesome way to test my skills and knowledge of the English language, with some potential of finding someone who I can befriend.

After about 2 months, in September, my aunt finally got a possibility to move me to Ireland. After my last hugs and goodbyes to my family, we proceeded to leave Ukraine. It took a couple of days: a whole day on the bus ride to Poland (since Ukrainian airports do not work due to Russian invasion), another day on an airplane and figuring out migration business in Dublin. And finally, I was finally settled into a new, warm home. There I met my uncle, my two great-grannies, and also my little cousin who apparently plays a lot of Roblox and tries some Lua programming alongside. They all welcomed me into a new home, into a new family.

After about a week, I then was settled into a new school, where I jumped straight to the 5th year. I immediately enjoyed it more than my Ukrainian school–the teachers are nicer; classmates don’t cause any havoc constantly. However, I do have a little problem with my personalized classes there. I first chose the DCG (Design & Communication Graphics) class, thinking it would be really interesting to learn some design principals and how to use CAD-specialized software. But since I have never learned such a subject before and I never had any experience with design sketching and CAD software for that matter, the teacher has decided with principal that I should be moved into a different class. I then went to the Art class, but there I realized that my “artistic skills” will not satisfy the educational program, especially when they are compared to the skills of my classmates which are capable of drawing using brush and paint while I have struggled with them since the age of 6. Therefore, the Act class is also a no-go. I still have to discuss this issue with my principal, but for now the issue is currently unresolved. Other than that, everything is chill and I’m finally enjoying math for the first time as the school gave me the Casio calculator for absolutely free-of-charge. Sick!

Another sick thing is, obviously, a new laptop! I’ve been waiting patiently for it, and it finally arrived. Still the same gaming shit, except the shit is now up-to-date. It has AMD Ryzen 5 7535HS CPU with Radeon Graphics, 16 gigs of RAM, and apparently GeForce RTX 4050 GPU. It also has a nice 144 Hz display and 1 TB storage SSD (which is currently sliced into two volumes, one for the system & programs, second for personal files).

As you may already see, this laptop has Windows 11 preinstalled by default, which would have gotten me mad back then, especially when looking back to the previous blog entry of mine where I was proudly displaying my Debian desktop with the MATE desktop environment. As time went by, however, I started to realize that it’s not that big of deal at all. Sure, Windows may not be the best operating system and Linux systems do have some features that are nice to have, but personally I would rather have a system that just works out of the box and call it a day. And this one will do, as long as I don’t trash it like the previous one, obviously. That being said, I do not plan on setting any Linux system on this laptop.

So, what now? Not really sure what else to add for now. I feel comfortable in my new home, sitting there writing this blog entry. I’m so far satisfied, and I hope I stay the same for as long as possible. That’s up to me though. Wish me luck.
