If tech companies are allowed to get rich mining our data and selling it to god-knows-who, then we should at least be paid for our data!
For example, check out this article: https://www.experian.com/blogs/ask-experian/heres-how-much-your-personal-information-is-selling-for-on-the-dark-web
Your personal information could be worth more than $4000 and yet Meta, Google, X, Microsoft etc are using it and selling it while paying you absolutely nothing.
Obviously, I'm kidding, but only partially. In reality, I think data mining and selling of personal information should be abolished and the web should be a fully not-for-profit system.

It's became a common practice that we pay for free online services in data. To most people it's just more convenient this way, because the concept of someone selling your data is somewhat abstract to most people. You know it happens, but most people don't think too much about it.
As a person who uses a setup of Mozilla + Duckduckgo + adblockers + tracker blockers, occasionally VPN and never accepts cookies I try to keep my information online as non-specific as it but I myself find myself sometimes simply not caring enough for convenience's sake.
I have accounts for services I'd rather not support but due to real-life needs like having a Facebook account to access Messenger, the most popular, "default" messaging app in the country. I can't just not have it, because it's expected of me to have it even at work. In the end, most people prefer convenience, rather than safety from "an abstract" abuse.
I miss the times where you could just buy something and just have it. Sure usually costed a lot of money, but at least you own the thing. Now everything is paid for with my exact location, my blood type and my shoe size, "freemium" or subscription based. I'm glad I still own an office 2007 pack!
Yeah absolutely! I agree with you and it is strange that we no longer own most of our digital information, both what we download and what we post online

There is an app (company?) that records your private phone calls and pays you for it. Supposedly only the person agreeing to it, the person with the app, is recorded.
Interesting! I wonder if people are likely to sign up. Once people actually think about the surveillance maybe they will share less
