"Ughhhh, where is she?! Does she even realize how late it is??"
Hime huffed out a sigh of frustration, dropping on to the seat of the couch, arms crossed. It was 10 o'clock at night, and she had spent the evening cleaning around the house. Many despise the very notion of tidying up, but to Hime, there was something peaceful about watching the space around her become less and less cluttered, and with a roommate like hers, there was always something to clean. This very roommate being the current object of her rapidly thinning patience.
Hime pulled out her cellphone and switched it on.
"No new texts, no missed calls. Typical Saki, always running off doing who knows what!" Hime's eyes wandered to the front door, as if trying to summon her missing friend. "Anything could happen to her and here I am, at home, without so much as a note on the fridge to let me know where she is. Ugh, she's never gonna hear the end of this when she comes home!"
Hime felt a blush spreading itself across her cheeks. The truth was, she missed Saki, and she missed her more than a normal friend should miss their friend. Hime couldn't help but get a little extra worried when Saki wasn't by her side, especially after being gone for most of the day. Hime sighed, and felt a little ashamed for possibly overreacting.
"Oh dear...I'm sure she's fine. Come on, Hime, let's stay calm-"
A couple knocks could be heard coming from the door. Hime immediately sprung up from her seat and made her way to open it. She undid the locks and practically swung the door open.
"Saki, where have you been?? I've been worried sick! You should've called or texted or-"
Hime stopped herself and got a good look at the figure at the door. Here was Saki in front of her, but no usual greeting, no friendly teasing. Saki was breathing heavily, and trying to stand herself up against the doorframe.
"H-Hime, I-" Saki coughed into her arm, and small amounts of red liquid escaped her lips. "Heh, sorry for the late...entrance..." She stumbled forward, and Hime caught her before she could fall to the ground. She led Saki to the couch closest to them and made her lay down.
Hime examined the girl. Her clothes were ripped and covered in blood, she had various cuts and bruises on her arms and legs. Part of her shirt looked like it was...burned? Saki was still coughing out blood, unable to say anything.
"S-Saki...w-what, what happened to you?? Who did this to you??" Hime was panicking, stumbling to try and get up. "Look, I'll get the first aid kit, and I-I'll call for help! Y-You're gonna be okay! You h-have to be!"
Saki coughed, and shook her head. She looked up at Hime, seemingly looking past her...
"I-It's...too late, Hime. There isn't any help for me...This is it..." Saki felt her eyelids getting heavy, it was a struggle to keep them open. She reached for Hime's hand and squeezed it as tightly as she could. "I'm sorry, Hime...I didn't...There's so much you don't know..."
Hime burst into tears, squeezing Saki's hand, brushing the hair away from her face.
"Saki, no. W-We can still get help, I can...I can still save you...!" Hime held Saki's hand close to her chest, close to her heart.
"Call the...director...she'll know what to..." Saki's voice trailed off. It was too late.
A sob that could rock the whole house escaped Hime's mouth. Saki was gone. Hime held her body close, clinging on to what was left of her beloved.
The most precious flower of Hime's garden had died, and she was powerless to stop it.
-----
Hours had gone by. The sun was rising, bringing his gentle light through the windows of the house. The pair were still there in the living room, having been in the same position, Hime never leaving Saki's side. How could she? She wouldn't dare leave Saki alone, not in life, and especially not in death. However, Hime knew she couldn't leave Saki like this. She had to make arrangements, and put her dearest flower to rest.
Hime slowly stood up, being careful not to disturb Saki, though it wouldn't have mattered anyway. Hime walked over to a mirror hanging on the wall to get a quick look at herself. Her clothes were stained with Saki's blood, and her face was puffy and red. Mascara marks could be seen on her cheeks, and her dark under-eyes were just the sad cherry on top of the miserable sundae. Hime was a mess, and not the kind she was so fond of tidying up.
"Saki...oh, Saki. How could this have happened?" Tears threatened to fall, but Hime had to calm herself. She couldn't waste any more time.
"Call the...director...she'll know what to..."
It was the last thing Saki said. Hime sighed. Of course Saki left her with some cryptic message. Even in death, Saki was still her usual mysterious self. Hime chuckled to herself somberly.
"Even now, Saki...you don't fail to amaze me." Hime let out a breath she didn't know she had been holding. "The director. Now who could that be-"
A lightbulb went off in Hime's mind. She went to pick up her cellphone and dialed the number.
'Duh' she thought to herself.
The dial tone played on Hime's phone for a couple seconds, until finally someone picked up.
"Hello and good morning. I apologize, but our funeral home isn't currently open for business-"
"I'm really sorry, but I need to speak with the director." Hime anxiously answered the voice on the other end. "I...I'm with the daughter of the Rosewood family, and I need your-"
"Did you say the Rosewoods?" the director paused for a moment. "...I'll be right there."
"Thank you-" the call ended before Hime could finish.
