This is the third blog post in a series where I rate music genres! Subscribe to keep up with the rest!
Despite it not being a whole day, I felt like rating another genre... so the wheel spun and gave me Country Gospel. I don't have a good feeling about country, but I'll try not to let any previous opinion stain my rating... A certain family, The Carter Family, decided to combine both Gospel and Country music together to create this one!
This sort of stuff was popular from the 20s to the 40s as far as I know, which is a long time ago. It's very easy to hear this in the music itself, by the production quality and the way the songs were recorded. They used to be made of Shellac back then instead of vinyl, which were a bit worse in quality... Though it's nice to get to hear something from all the way back then, it's like taking a slice out of their life in the 20s instead of having to be in 2025.
Rhythms in these songs are often repetitive, there is singing present all the way and most of it is centered around religion and the Lord. Considering the time, this makes a lot of sense, a lot of the music had similar themes around the time. As far as I remember, blues and country were coexisting around the same times, being the only real music genres to get popular.
Sadly the repetitive nature makes this very boring and hard to listen to. Guitar playing is very impressive though, same with the vocal ability of the singers... it just isn't my style, really. The songs seem too cheerful in tone and melody, nothing notable to find for me here. As much as I tried. Other genres around the same time are more enjoyable to me.
The little adventure I went through this time to find out about Country Gospel just brought me right where I left off. Being a bit upset I got something Country related this time. As someone who "likes almost every genre", Country is just a bit too boring and repetitive to me. Unless someone knows something truly unique to change my mind, Country Gospel won't be something I'll listen to again for a good while.
1/10
Songs I listened to:
The Carter Family - River of Jordan
Johnny Cash - Swing Low, Sweet Chariot
Eddie Head and Family - Lord I'm The True Vine

One gospel song i really liked was really catchy in church, but they changed the arrangement :'(
Awh :( Considering its gospel, maybe its a common song sung in churches so you could look for some other recording of it?

1/10 is pretty harsh, the louvin brothers' gospel stuff is really good
I was thinking about it being a 2/10 but it really is just kind of too repetitive to me. I love memorable songs where I can hum the melodies whenever I'm not listening to the music! I can't really do this here... But I might listen to this and change my mind?

It might, but if you arent really into country it definitely is not the best place to start. At folsom prison, red headed stranger and gunfighter balads and trail songs are what i would consider to be the essential country albums, also listen to some john denver if you want something catchier, can never go a few days without one of his song being stuck in my head

Catchy is exactly what I'm looking for! Thanks, I'll make sure to listen in then :)
