Minecraft is bloated || Thoughts & Opinions #1

Welcome to Thoughts & Opinions!

My blog series where I talk about things that I feel deeply about which usually doesn't involve real-world-issues, but we'll see. :)

Today's topic: Minecraft

I'm an average Minecraft player - have been since 2017/18.

My first real introuction I had in 2012 and though I only played for a few hours, I saw a lot of potential and did enjoy it quite a lot.

In all these years I've played, I've noticed that I've had a turning point where I started disliking some features implimented - which is normal ofc, nothing is truly perfect, but it felt like something changed way too drastically.

I'm talking about version 1.18 - The Caves & Cliffs Update Part 2. (aka the version when The Warden was added).

I've always felt as if that was completely unnecessary and while I do like how some people can make a lot of sense of the version in the form of lore videos, I've always thought that The Warden specifically is so... weirdly out of place. Like a forced-upon-mod or something. Similar to every other version afterwards.

Since that version, every update has been completely pointless in my opinion. Sure, the sakura tree's are pretty and I'm sure a lot of millenials love the pale oak (for legal reasons, this is a joke), but I feel as though the Mojang team has "lost the plot", as you'd say nowadays.

I think back to older versions and despite having less blocks to choose from, I don't struggle nearly as hard to build something as I do in the after-1.18.-versions. And I think it's because the question has changed. The question of "WHAT can I build?" has somehow turned to "HOW can I build it?", which is unfortunate.

Because that simple word exchange changes completely how you approach the game. It's less creative. Almost like you're expected to build something, which you legit aren't. Minecraft is - at it's core - a sandbox game. If you want you can live in Villager houses, Pillager outposts and mansions or even a goddamn manhole for the whole existance of your world.

That's the essence of the game; to play it how you want it to, and I feel like the newer versions don't highlight that enough anymore.

I get so bored & overstimmulated by all the blocks to choose from in the UI/creative menu that I'm loosing the will to play at all. And everything I've reflected upon was only about building & creating, don't even get me started on all the new functions.

Why did they change how the ender pearl works? How many servers have crashed/lagged because of all the loaded chunks from it? Why did we get the copper golem when we clearly voted against it in the last mob-vote? What was the point of having all the votes when you'll just add the features anyway? And most importantly; why aren't we getting an End update?

(I was gonna argue against the Happy Ghast but I suppose it does help building in survival. Then again... Elytra's exist. Just saying. YEAH. WAIT. ELYTRA'S EXIST, MOJANG??? Why do we need a stupid Happy Ghast??)

The Sniffer is so f**king useless btw - I don't care about some extra flowers bro... And as far as I understand, Copper Golems are just item-sorters which the community has built for years with redstone. And the Camel omg why? Why does it exist? I just- I don't understand.

All this to say; I don't judge anyone for enjoying the newer versions.

Frankly if you've been bored by the vanilla settings up until those major changes before 1.18, then the implimented features might just have come as a blessing to you. New things to gather, new lore, new stuff to explore. By all means, go for it!

I do like the sakura trees and the feel of the deep dark a lot myself.

But I've been playing 1.8.9 recently - to my knowledge the last version before Microsoft came along - and it's a completely different exprience. I feel as if Notch - while not being the greatest person for sure - had some different ideas than Mojang has had. I actually had fun in that older version, because it's less stuff to worry about, like my brain can actually comprehend the next steps and chill about it...

I wouldn't necessarily call it my favorite version - cuz that spot goes to 1.17.2 - but it's defo worth playing if you like the old-school-vibes and you think beta is too old-school for you. :)

I can defo talk more about Minecraft and my stance on it, but I'll end it here because this blog is long enough already lolol.

Thanks for reading, love to you & stay determined. <3

I feel like that throughout the updates a lot of features are just not fleshed out enough. A lot of things now just have a lot of one-off use cases which can be really annoying in my opinion. I could go on and on about examples, but then we'd be here all day.
It seems Microsoft is too scared to do anything particularly new or different, so they keep just adding small stuff that impacts the core experience as little as possible, which has lead to a lot of very shallow mechanics that I think make the game feel kinda bloated and overwhelming.

Minecraft has went so far with the features that there is less game and more of a tool to make your own experience with. These days, there is no limitations to limit creative exploration. It might as well be an art program rather than a game once you have consumed everything it has to offer which happens with YT videos way too quickly. You either make your own fun or play everyone else's works with the java ways or through the bedrock marketplace which is pretty much Roblox and all that I hate about it and more.

For me, nothing that is good left over is worth the time and effort when I can find better games elsewhere.
