Playlists are truly one of the greatest things to come out of the digital era. Having all your music just on your PC is a huge help to anyone who wants to mix up their music! They're an art form where you can express yourself through words that aren't your own. So here's my steps to become everyone's favorite DJ!
1. Pick a Theme - A good playlist has all the music fit the intended purpose. You wouldn't want to go to a football after party and hear Kenny G blaring his saxophone right? So try to match the vibe of the occasion. Some good ideas may include:
- Soft instrumental music for more formal gatherings, think a recital or one of those gatherings your parents lecture you on how to handshake properly XD.
- Hip Hop is good for a sports after party, you want it to feel like a party right?
2. The Perfect Length - Playlists need substance. While a playlist of 3 songs can work, who wants to hear the same three songs at a party? A good length for a playlist should be an hour and a half to two hours. It keeps things unique while fitting the time-span of most gatherings.
3. Ask for Tips - Everybody loves to feel included, so ask your friends for their favorite songs. Having a playlist with multiple views can create a fun mix of genres and music, though remember to know your audience!
4. Listen Through it - You need to make sure the songs fit, and the only real way is listening through the playlist. You don't need to sit on iTunes for two hours straight, but at least listening to it in chunks will help you sort the order of the songs in a way that is uniquely you.
5. Export it - Bringing your PC everywhere you go isn't really logical, it's not like you can fit that huge box and monitor into your pocket! Some of my favorite ways to export a playlist include:
- A mix CD is a classic, and most places already have CD-based sound systems. On iTunes you can simply right click the playlist name on the left of your screen and click "Burn Playlist to CD". An Audio CD will work on all CD players, but it can only fit 80 minutes of play, while most CD players support MP3 CDs. MP3 CDs allow you to fit all 700MB of music onto the CD! I would recommend checking your CD player to make sure it supports MP3 CDs before burning your CD
- Using an iPod is much easier, as you just have to click the sync button and all your music and your playlist is available to switch between at any moment! You can also shuffle your playlist if you want. While shuffling can ruin a song order on an emotional playlist, it can help keep things feeling unique where music is the background noise. Another perk of an iPod is you get all the storage of an iPod, being anywhere from 5-160GB (5,000-160,000MB). This can give you playlists that are days long - not recommended unless you're super invested!
- If you're using a laptop computer then you can simply plug it in and have all your music right there, or buy some in the moment for the impulsive ones! It has all the same perks as the iPod except that you can add and move music at a moment's notice, even swapping playlists if you're that invested lol!
To conclude my quick guide, my biggest piece of advice is do whatever makes you happy! While I think I have good suggestions, they're not end all, be alls! Keep making awesome music, and maybe send a text list of the songs in your playlist into my comments. I love seeing y'all's creations.
Stay Cool - Natallia
