HIM (2025) Is A Bit Dissapointing

I keep thinking about it, and like, the movie falls short on what it's trying to do.

The movie is about Cameron Cade( played by Tyriq Withers), American Football prodigy, that although slated to be a great player, gets attacked by a rabid fan, leaving him with a slight concussion, and not being able to play football for quite while. That is until he gets invited to a 1 week bootcamp led by his idol, Isiah White (played by Marlon Wayans). Cameron goes through the deal, but as the week goes on, things just start getting strange, and in the end, he goes on a killing spree.

I decided to watch this movie with friends on the day of my birthday, which is a bit funny.

Anyways, like I said, the more I think about this movie, the more empty handed it feels. I once had the idea it was going to be a movie about the logical extreme of "I'll do anything to achieve my goal" but really, this movie is trying to dissect the obsession and exploitation that goes through sports, especially American football. This is a bit blatant with constant reference to legacy, and especially with the football team itself being led by a cult. But the movie doesn't really go anywhere with these ideas. It's a bit strange.

Isiah White, football superstar, is the main villain of the movie, but he doesn't feel like one. He just feels like a weird ass guy. That's bad if you want to have the villain have constant mood swings that often makes the protagonist feel in danger, but Isiah never really comes off as a threat, like ever, even Cameron isn't that threatened by him for a majority of the movie. Wayans is very good in the role, but the movie's portrayal makes him come off as goofy. I guess his wife is trying to be a critique of celebrity culture but it doesn't really come off in that way. I noticed quite a bit of religious imagery but they don't go anywhere with that either. Many of the settings in the movie present a lavish lifestyle, rich people stuff, but nothing gets done with that either. There's set up for a lot of things but the payoff is barely there, it's kinda insane.

On the upside however, the editing and visuals of this movie are spectacular. Especially when the x-ray effect comes on screen. There's a scene where it's rapidly flashing blue and red lights (something I was not aware of) so if you're watching this movie, beware.
I found the movie to be really comedic as well, mostly from lines Marlon Wayans says in the movie. Acting in general in this movie is really good, everyone in it does a good job.

I just really think the movies falls short on what it's trying to do. I left the theatre a bit puzzled cuz the movie, I have to admit, tripped me up a bit, but the more I think about it, the more nothing I get as a result.

If someone watched the movie, I'll like to hear their opinion about it.
