First of all, just want to clarify that there will be no number rating in ANY of my reviews, I find number rating to clutter my mind and reduce my thoughts on an album overall. If I think an album/EP is good I will say so! With that said, lets get into this album!
Chikoi The Maid - Velocity
✧✧✧Velocity is a Post-Punk Rock album with heavy focus on ambience with a little jungle break beat thrown in as a treat ✧✧✧
Track list, and individual thoughts
✧1. Beholder✧
I love the way beholder pulls you in and really sets the standard for the whole album. Just when I thought it was getting repetitive it almost immediately switches up the whole backing guitar section.
✧2. Timeline✧
A switch to a track mostly focused on it's ambience (which is common) with more repetition than beholder. not a bad track, just nothing that stood out to me personally.
✧3.The Hill✧
I really love the shaky back and forth ambience towards the end of the song. slows down significantly towards the end, but still great!
✧4.Misunderstandings✧
The slow fade in breakbeat drums at the beginning is so cool, and I really love the choice to keep them subdued and quiet so the guitar can shine. I also really love the almost detuned off kilter piano near the end!
✧5.Reflection✧
Killer ambient opening that keeps the momentum going throughout. My favorite thing is the backing guitar chords mixed with the use of guitar scratching (the sound an electric guitar makes when you run your finger up/down the string) in the ambience is inspired.
✧6.Gromping✧
"Gromp - An aggressive tackle hug" is just how this track feels. Insanely good drops and absolutely highlights Chikoi's use of two electric guitars.
✧7.Returnal✧
The drums on this track just stole all of my attention. incredibly good structure and helps with this songs never ending feeling of tension building.
✧8.Velocity✧
The title track, and for good reason. this is what Returnal was building up to. The FX work on the guitars is masterful. another great example of Chikoi's use of double guitar. Probably the most solidly "Chikoi" song on the album
✧9.Resistance✧
Resistance to me is THE stand out song on this album. again with masterful work on the double guitars, just carrying the main melody to more than it could have been with just one instead of cluttering the sound. small hints of breakbeats and ambience throughout. A lovely mix of all of the things that make Chikoi a standout artist to me.
Conclusion and Closing Thoughts
Velocity is notably more subdued than what I'm used to hearing from Chikoi, but not in a bad way. I think the heavy emphasis on switching from more focus on ambient and more focus on the main melodies makes this a Great listen.
