This poem is one I am very proud of. I will not stop anyone from taking inspiration from it, but please if you do use more than one line word-for-word, just credit or link me in it. After all, I would be very happy to learn that a piece of my work inspired someone.
Arms wrapped around you
the warm morning embrace of your partner
as you both snuggle in bed with drops of
golden sunlight leaking through the blinds
Resting softly on your faces
And when your eyelids open
You find your pupils tethered to theirs
And theirs tethered to yours
Looking into one another’s hearts
Your souls irrevocably linked
Here, now, and always
For each day when the rooster cries
And you must get out of bed
And get dressed
And wash your face
And brush your teeth
You feel a little fire burning
For each day when you prepare to leave to work
And grab your bag
Perhaps a coffee
Say your I love you’s
And give each other a tight hug
A peck goodbye at the door
Taking that one last look back over your shoulder
You leave each other with a little piece of yourselves
To help push through the day
And at the end of it
To lead you back into the arms
of one another
Back to home
Billions of years from now
When the stars burn out
And the sun explodes
When black holes steal light away from us and destroy all matter
When they consume every living thing that ever has been, and annihilate every living thing that ever could be
Still our love will stand
Stronger than ever
Without rings
Or bodies to wear them
Without faces
Or lips to kiss, hair to run fingers through
The universe will still feel our arms wrapped around one another
We can live and die a thousand times
And in every life, every reincarnation
No matter what form we may take
Our love will remain
Two crabs on the jetty
Sharing a minnow for dinner
Two specks of dust in the air
Clinging to one another, flowing in the breeze
Two frogs in the forest
Sleeping side by side in the same hollowed-out log
Billions of years from now
When the stars burn out
And the sun explodes
When black holes steal light away from us and destroy all matter
When we ascend to another plane
We’ll be holding hands at the gates of heaven
You can sit in my lap as I rub your shoulders
And I’ll let you play with my curls
And we won’t have to let go of that hug before work ever again.
