I mainly watched different video tutorials on how to make pixel art. I'll add links to the tutorials--I found most helpful--below.
☆ The main thing to remember is the canvas size when creating a new document. I used 64x64px or 100x100px (px = pixels), set up a grid, and then used a one pixel brush ☆

One of the tutorials showed how to make a grid so you can see where every pixel is. But it's only on Krita, which is what I use for my art.
The other videos do show alternative programs and apps to use for pixel art, though not all of them are free.
