Chapter 2: Of Being Human & Single

"It's been two years, Tala, and you've got a reputation going."

"I'm just having fun being single, Wei. Can I not have fun?"

"Of course you can, dear, but we're worried about you choosing the wrong guy every time."

"Sara, I'm fine. This is like trial and error, alright? I'm not in a rush to get married."

The tall couple, a young pale Asian man and a young dark Caribbean woman, sighed in unison as they looked down at the small Asian woman standing before them. Another one of their friends, a tall white man with light brown hair and blue eyes, raised an eyebrow at the exchange between the other three people in the group while sipping his coffee.

Longwei wrinkled his nose and scanned their surroundings. They've been standing outside of the Irish pub for the past few minutes at the local beach boardwalk. The smell of the California sea coast lingers in the air, giving a cool air breeze.

"Can we not talk about this at the pub area? It's packed," he complained as he peeked behind him through the windows. Inside, the pub was indeed packed full of avid watchers for the upcoming soccer game.

Sarafina frowned as she tied her long black braids together. "It's kind of chilly, though. I'm not much for beach weather."

Longwei frowned at his girlfriend. "You're Caribbean."

"And?"

"And you were raised by the beach area," the white guy chimed in with a cheeky grin.

"In the south!"

Tala reached up to wave at everyone's faces to grab their attention and pointed at an open alcove with a distinct curvature shape near the sandy beach shore. "Let's go there!"

She ran towards the area she gestured at as the others took a short moment to stare at her, watching her attempt to cross the street while apologizing to the moving cars across the road. The white man leaned towards the multi-racial couple. "You know, if I never discovered that she was a hidden primordial being with an existential crisis, I would have considered her to be a cute little gremlin with a penchant for wiccan culture and scarily accurate predictions."

Sara raised her eyebrow at him in response. "And now that you know what she is?"

"Firstly, her entire existence is something I should consider to be impossible and I should be fearing for my life - "

"I don't blame you. I felt the same way."

" - but she actually enjoys the church, which is baffling, considering she's - "

" - human." Longwei interrupted and glared at both of them, gesturing to their friend, who waved wildly from a distance at the open alcove area surrounded by tall palm trees. "A small human who one day grew wings and started getting pieces of memories as an angel - "

"Yeah, but the type of angel she or he is - "

" - is irrelevant, Cassius," Longwei lightly punched the white man on his bicep and jerked his head towards Tala. "Her entire personality has been shifting in and out for the past couple of years every time her previous life is mentioned - can we not bring up her whole ass identity and what she used to represent?"

Sara reluctantly nodded in support. "That's right, sweetie. One crisis at a time. Let's start with the wings and her being single."

Cassius frowned. "I'm pretty sure her being single is irrelevant to sprouting fucking wings, Sara."

Cassius pinched the bridge of his nose. "...okay, let's just... rewind from the top. This is a lot of information to uphold. I'm still trying to come to terms with my own discoveries."

All three friends nodded at him as they all stood in the shape of the alcove area.

"Okay, now..." He glanced around at the shape and paused for a moment. "...oh God, we're standing in the shape of a heart. I just realized."

The others looked around and appeared surprised by the coincidence, considering the upcoming topic.

"Alright, I'll need a moment..." Cassius took a deep breath and pointed at Tala. "Two years ago, you found out your eyes could flash out blue and gold, and... you can sprout out wings from your back."

Tala silently nodded.

He then pointed at Longwei. "You found out a couple of months later after she brought a young couple in college together. You walked in on her changing and you saw her wings on her back."

Longwei sighed and nodded.

Cassius then pointed at Sarafina. "You found out about her angel-ness a year ago when she brought you to the church she usually goes to since college. She started singing and her eyes glowed blue and gold."

Sarafina nodded. "She also had a golden halo above her head."

Tala squawked in surprise. "Sara! You didn't tell me that before!"

"You were freaking out so I didn't wanna add to your panic attack!"

Cassius raised his eyebrows. "Tala had a panic attack at a church?"

"I had a sudden memory surge, okay?!"

"Of what, Heaven?"

Silence ensued. All eyes turned to Tala, who appeared pained at the thought of her memories.

"...Tala, what was the memory again?"

Tala's gaze slowly shifted up to meet Cassius'.

"...when Gabriel and I led the choir. He held the trumpet and I held the lyre."

He slowly nodded. "...okay, so... angel confirmed. And I found out a few days ago in an alleyway when you literally flew in and stabbed a group of guys who were beating me up."

"...to be fair, they were demons?" She sheepishly shrugged her shoulders.

"But how did you know?"

"I just... I don't know. I felt the shift in the ethereal plane of existence and the presence felt demonic, so I jumped out the window - "

"It was a 5-story hotel we were in," Longwei muttered. "Out the window."

" - yes, that - and flew straight to the demons."

Cassius stared. "Okay... I've never asked before, but... where did you get the blade from?"

"I... kind of spawned it in my hand?"

Sarafina stared at her. "You... spawned it in?"

"It was like I willed it to appear - whatever would make the demons go away."

All three humans stared at their friend.

Cassius decided to take charge of the conversation again. "Alright, alright... let's backtrack a bit... your memories... the bits and pieces you remember... can you recall which specific angel you are?"

Tala bit her lip in thought. "All I remember is a name... Sam... Sam-ah-el? Samael..."

Sarafina's breath hitched. "The original name of the Devil..."

At the fearful look on Tala's face, Longwei decided to shift the conversation again. "So are we gonna talk about how every guy she talks to ends up in a relationship?"

Tala gaped at him and slapped him on the chest. "It's not like I was dating every guy or fucking every guy I've been talking to!"

Longwei rolled his eyes. "I didn't say that! I meant that each time you spend time with a guy - whether platonic or otherwise - they end up in a happy relationship."

Cassius blinked twice at that information. "...wait, my recent ex-girlfriend and I have been talking..."

Longwei wildly gestured to Tala. "See?! I'm not crazy! She's Cupid-personified!"

"Well... what do I do with that information?" Tala asked.

Just then, music started playing from a distance at the boardwalk. All four friends turned to see a young man with a mask on, dancing smoothly and elegantly.

Tala's eyes widened as her irises flashed blue and gold. "Demon...?"
