Ok so! This entry is basically a love letter to...
Yeah, the original 1982 TRON, which was made during Disney's weird transition period from cartoons and comedy movies to actual "serious" live action movies.
Anyway, Disney never really wanted to have anything to do with those "teen/adult" movies, in fact the Walt Disney logo is noticeably missing on the promo posters and other things, it appears only in production credits. Their reputation at the time was really still about making things for kids, and sci-fi and horror (horror?) movies were still quite frowned upon.
I said horror because there is, in fact, a horror movie from Disney (still credited as production and not as brand), and it's based on a novel by none other than Ray Bradbury, Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983).
Obviously they're now all available on Disney+ along with Flight Of The Navigator (1986) because hey, we're the notorious brand known for milking cows like Lucasfilm and Marvel and we wouldn't really miss the chance to milk the 80s vintage nostalgia cow as well, would we?
Ahem.
Anyway, 1982's TRON was definitely ahead of its time with the cutting edge 3D graphics and the entirely electronic soundtrack made by the famous electronic pioneer Wendy Carlos (whose Switched-On Bach album published by her deadname Walter Carlos is now almost impossible to find at reasonable prices and absolutely out of the question to find in any streaming service).
I mean look at that, they even predicted friggin' touch screens and 3d scans!
Not to forget the original designs and concepts for everything that appeared on screen were made by none other than Jean Giraud - Moebius and Syd Mead!
In fact, it was so ahead of its times that it made a big flop at the box office.
It later (much later) made a comeback with Tron: Legacy, which was good - especially for the original soundtrack by Daft Punk (farewell!) - but I personally didn't enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the original movie concept.
I guess I'm more for the oldies.
I guess I'm more for the oldies.
This whole thread gives me the chance to talk about a little big project of a certain DDProgram, aka David Fleming, who has been active on TRON-sector for years and "fairly" recently opened a Patreon in which he posts updates about his prop-making (which also includes his t-shirt and canvas prints, in case anyone is interested), VR developing and interviews with notable members of the TRON production for his podcast, The I/O Tower.
And with this entry, I say END OF LINE, until next time!
