gothic horror films

It's one of my favorite genres and I wanted to share some of the films I enjoyed, it's also a way to organize them so you can find them more easily. I'm using the following definition for this list: Gothic horror is a style of Horror film that incorporates Gothic imagery, such as architecture and dress, and deeply relies on a bleak, uneasy, and dreamlike atmosphere. These films have been influenced by the Gothic literature that originated in the mid- to late-18th century, as well as stage melodramas and German Expressionism.

Films of the genre are usually set on desolate landscapes and in inescapable situations, placing an emphasis on the audience response. They present striking visuals and symbolism while exploring morality, philosophy, religion, and sexuality.

Frankenstein (2025)

This one has not released yet, but it's worth a mention so I included it here. According to early reviewers it's going to be very faithful to the book, I believe it's going to be a good adaptation. I will change this description once the film releases.

I don't know that it necessarily fits the bounds of gothic horror thematically, but The Hunger (1983) has a very interesting slick 1980s take on gothic imagery that I really enjoy. very intense color grading and dramatics, it's worth checking out.
