Willow - fantasy movie log I

I watched this movie last week over the course of a couple days because I kept getting busy.

rating: ✮✮✮½✰

Spoilers ahead!!

I really enjoyed this movie! it was a like a very goofy version of Lotr. I think this movie being low budget made it very charming. I can always appreciate crappy practical affects.

they must have employed every dwarf on the planet because wow, that Nelwyn town was populated. what a rich and charming culture the Nelwyns had. I absolutely loved their set and costume design and the music and sorcery was so fantastical !

I like the magic in this movie. its like a mix of real magic of slight-of-hand trickery. it doesn't make any sense and I love it.

I think Willow was a very lovable character. I'm shocked I got to see such a sensitive, loving father in a movie from this era. Madmartigan made me laugh and I liked the development of their relationship. lowkey yaoi. not the biggest fan of Madmartigan's relationship with Sorsha but that is just an unfortunate quality of most 80s movies. (why couldn't writers in the 80s just write non-creepy men and healthy relationships?). though I do think they are well-represented as equals and their relationship kind of redeems itself at the end. don't get me started on the Brownies they were so so annoying they should have had way less screen time but whatever.

I love that the prophecy came full circle and Elora did not defeat the queen in the future but rather defeated her as a baby because of all of the noble people willing to protect her! Madmartigan and Sorsha being the king and queen who adopt her was a nice twist that i should have seen coming lol.

this movie's worldbuilding really stood on two legs and it was very unique and fun! the journey they go on is very enjoyable and I love the exploration of the world and character development. I would definitely watch this again.
