Lavender does not grow in the sagebrush
Though purple it may also be
Nor in the winding wetlands
With slick and mossy stones
Only in the hollow warmth seeping
Beneath the windowsill
Baptized in my incandescent light
That paints all things in fire
The lavender is black as coal
Where it blooms on the stem
It reaches hungrily toward me
And I close the window
Then turn away
But the imprint follows
With no nictation to defeat
