Probably because when older generations were growing up, mental health was still a taboo subject. If someone went to the psych ward or even took medications to treat their mental illness, they were seen as a crazy person and a nutjob, unsuitable for society and a danger. Depression and anxiety have always been a thing, but more people were just taught to hide and/or downplay their emotions in order to not get sent to a ward and to become stigmatized. Adults may seem like they don't care about their child's mental health because they could've been raised in an environment where issues like these were brushed off due to little or no psychological studies surrounding mental illness and its effects on the brain.
It sucks, but it's only a learning process from here on out.
