To begin, Gangle is a very inferior person compared to Jax personality-wise. She's fragile, vulnerable both emotionally and physically, hopeless, meek, and chronically depressed. She wears her heart on her sleeve, whereas Jax is a big (and intimidating) presence, confident in what he does, and seemingly never better. If you had to guess between these two characters "which of them would abstract first?" the majority would agree on Gangle.

Now let's dissect Jax's character. As of episode six, we can infer that Jax isn't really the sadist he claims to be. He's obviously touch-deprived and still subconsciously yearns for companionship. The reason why he doesn't act on his core desires, let alone acknowledge them, is because sentiments like that are foolish and dangerous. He copes with his predicament(s) by disregarding his humanity, completely embracing his "archetype" as a flat, comedic relief character (dehumanization). Stuck in his own paranoia, he bottles inappropriate emotions unfit of his character and refuses the express vulnerability, neglecting himself of honest connection. All for a sense of safety and control.

It's plausible that the reason why Jax primarily torments Gangle is because (1) it's "in-character," and (2) Gangle is everything Jax deliberately tries to shut down and cram away — vulnerability, humanity, overwhelmingly negative or "irrelevant" emotions. Jax fears it; therefore instinctively doing what he can to push it away.

Gangle is prone to Jax's abuse enough for it to have a lasting affect on her health. In episode six during her sit-down with Zooble, she admits her anxiety of Jax, her tormentor, fearing the painful consequence she'll be met with once they reunite. Zooble reminds her that she's human and not a toy. Gangle, unlike Jax, embraces her humanity and winds up much happier, simultaneously forming a closer bond with Zooble through mutual trust. This is a major turning point in the story.

Kinger in episode three states "the worst thing you can do is make someone think they're not wanted or loved." This sentiment strongly pertains to their dynamic. Jax's method, in an attempt to protect himself, has only brought him closer to abstraction, whereas Gangle's emotional availability and ability to trust has pulled her away from that fate. This is because through Gangle's method, she now has a crutch to lean on; a helping hand. Jax has nothing to stand on, ironically making him the most vulnerable in turn. Jax is now behind Gangle in the horse race by a substantial distance, with Jax's regression and Gangle's progression since the gun fight.
