Hello and welcome to my first blog ever lol
Normally, I'd be the one asking for music recs, as I listen to the same songs over and over again, but I've been wanting to do such a blog about something I like for quite some time now and even if no one reads this, I'd at least have a snippet of the past for myself. And what wouldn't be a better of a topic for that than music?
Most of those albums I listened to last year, maybe into the beginning of 2025? I can't quite remember but I'll try to gather everything I know and tought/think about the album itself.
I can't quite pinpoint why I don't listen to these anymore even tough in my opinion, some are very good, some not bad at all. Maybe my taste has shifted or those few hours I spent with them was just enough to add something to me for a lifetime? I couldn't tell, so I want to share those and my experiences with it in case future me or someone else would look into it again.
So here are 10 albums (in no specific order!) I would defo recommend to anyone to be honest.
1. For Lovers by Lamp
I think this one came to mind first because it stuck to me for a while as a comfort album. Calm, indie/bedroom-pop vibes, with some jazzy-ish elements, the text are in Japanese, as the Band is a Japanase Band from the 2000s (I couldn't seem to find more recent music). It's just a very different experience from the Indie or Jazz you may usually listen to. There are eight songs around 33 minutes. My fav is probably "Rainy Tapestry".
2. Mount Eerie by The Microphones
I can't quite put this in one genre box, I'd say it's something in between Indie Folk, Indie Rock, Experimental Rock, maybe even Psychedelic? Contains 5 longer tracks (I think over 5min) with the individual songs lyrically being a continuation of each other. They represent nature and the cycle of life. I didn't listen to it that many times but it has something unique that itches my brain a very specific way. It's really worth a listen.
3. -!- by Dead Poet Society
I don't know the exact relation (if there is any) to the movie but I did like the lyricism very much (especially in SaLT and CoDA.). It's more of an Alt Rock vibe going on here, really cool, laid-back and sometimes aggressive. Definetely an underrated band, I highly recommend their Singles too (some are better than the songs on the album imo), "Under My Skin" was my fav song for weeks and weeks on end. Very addictive, very nice sound, writing this I really want to go back and listen to them again.
4. Absolution by Muse
Even if there is not really a popular banger like "Supermassive Blackhole" in it still one of the best works of the band in my opinion. Just 14 tracks of that pure End-Of-The-World-Feeling. It really influenced my taste and is what got me into Alt Rock/Artrock and out of it again. I recommend listening to that alone laying down.
5. Altbau by 01099
Again, influenced my taste in German Rap with their more chill beats, melo lyrics and that simple attitude towards things that gives you a warm, homey feeling. I think the hype is deserved for this one, multiple tracks were my favorites for a while. The lyrics are simple but in a very recognizable way, which I think is pretty cool as well.
6. All Times Favorites by Shirley Kwan
At that time my taste was a little bit all over the place and in my opinion it's the bit of 90s Cantopop you didn't know you needed. She just stunned and captivated me with her voice and I became more curious about music from elsewhere than English-speaking countries. So it definetely was an addition. I'll admit, I never listened to the full album but it's an experience I recommend nonetheless to everyone who's looking for something taste-expanding or just something they've never heard before.
7. De l'accordeoniste a milord by Edith Piaf
Ok, I'm cheating a bit about that one, I still listen to Piaf from time to time because she's just great. It has some really popular and known songs in it and I don't think it can get more peak Piaf then this. Great if you want to get into older French music. Plus, I think everyone has to listen to her voice once in their lifetime, it's just one you wouldn't forget. Pure parisian essence, just an all-time favorite I think.
8. Hi How Are You by Daniel Johnston
Just go listen to it. I don't think I can describe Daniel Johnston as well as he deserves to be and just forget about "Walking The Cow". Even if you think it's weird (and I thought so too), it's worth a try. Plus, man's been making music for 40+ years, so you gotta give him credit for that too.
9. Carrie and Lowell by Sufjan Stevens
Here again, I'm still listening to Sufjan but it's been a hot minute. It's just the reality of comfort in discomfort, of a certain calm in conflicts. It's laying at night by a body of water having done "nothing" all day but thinking. Listening that on a drive through nature or at night is definetely recommended. I really love that one, his voice is really soothing and familiar, something I think everyone can appreciate even if they don't really like Indie-ish music at all.
and last but not least
10. Tristesse Business Saison 01 and Saison 00 by Luidji
French rapper. Very raw but soft, very real, very artistic. I like how he expresses himself. It sounds like he doesn't care but he cares very much and I enjoyed both albums and perceived them as one, which is why I listed them both and I think the tracks on both deserve a listen if you want more modern artsy French music in your life.
That's it for now! Thank you for reading. Hope you enjoyed and I would love to hear about your favorites as well!
