Really Love: A Blickity Black Love Story

Really Love – a blickity black love story that poses an everyday theme.. for the love of my craft or for the love of my life? I watched this movie on the strength of melanin alone. The casting was PHENOMENAL! I need to know what kind of moisturizer they had on set because everyone’s skin looked smooth like butter.

I have a love-hate relationship with this movie though. I live to see a movie where black people can just be themselves. They had black names, black interest, afros, it was just really refreshing to see us being ourselves on the screen. I loved that there were all types of black people, from rich to poor, entrepreneurs to lawyers, artists to art gallery owners. Black people are not monolithic, we are  very versatile and belong in all the spaces.

However, the movie lacks….depth? Like it was very slow..it was very melodramatic but also very mundane. There was a lot of great cinematography but not much else that would make this  worth another watch. The movie was literally us watching this couple flirt, kiss a lot, and break up in such an over dramatic way.

Like I understood the plot. He’s a starving artists, she’s a successful lawyer. He feels like he is doing all he can, she feels like he isn’t doing enough. She’s desperately trying to hold onto the relationship and he is focused on trying to make his career work and half-loving this woman. It sounds much better written out than it did actually unfolding on the screen.

Overall I am still glad this movie exists. It was very beautiful. It had its moments too because I doubled over in laughter when Kofi’s dad said, “Let me find out you like being broke!” I hope everyone takes the time to give it a watch but just don’t have high expectations for this to be an A++ romance movie.

Key Takeaways:

  • You are the most important thing you have, never throw you away for someone else.
  • Listen to your mama sometimes she’s right!
  • Love is not always enough and that’s ok, walk away if it’s the best thing for you.
