Canadian Artists You Should Check Out

I was thinking about how many fantastic Canadian artists and bands there are that people either don't know, or don't realize are Canadian. Here are a couple of my favourites.

Avril Lavigne

- Queen of 2000s alt pop

- Sk8er Boi was my jam when I was like 10

The Beaches

- Indie/alt pop band from Toronto (I think)

- Also very gay (although I'm not sure which of them specifically are gay)

- I'd suggest starting with Blame Brett because that's their most popular song and it's a vibe

Shania Twain

- You can't talk about Canadian music without mentioning Shania Twain

- '80s country

- While not Indigenous herself, she has spoken about her connection to the Ojibway community because her adoptive father is Ojibway

Alanis Morissette

- I'm not sure what I could say about Alanis Morissette, she's already such a well known icon

Mariana's Trench

- Alt pop band from the 2010s

- My mom listened to them all the time when I was growing up

Barenaked Ladies

- I don't know how to categorize their music

- Google says it's rock

Nelly Furtado

- 2000s pop

- Her biggest songs are Maneater and Promiscuous

Tegan and Sara

- Lesbians

- girl in red for millennials

Carly Rae Jepsen

- CALL ME MAYBE

- Queen of 2000s pop!!

Simple Plan

- Rock band from Montreal

- Bonus points for having French versions of some of their songs

Finger Eleven

- I didn't know they were Canadian until now!

- Most known for Paralyzer, which always makes me feel goth when I listen to it

- Rock band

The Weeknd

- You can't NOT mention The Weeknd when making a list of Canadian artists

- Pop and R&B

Drake

- Listen. I'm a Kendrick Lamar fan, so adding Drake to this list hurt, but it would be unfair not to acknowledge his contribution to the Canadian music scene. 

- I prefer his earlier albums

- Hiphop

Tory Lanez

- R&B and hiphop

- His music blends together so effortlessly, it's really smooth

Kardinal Offishall

- Hiphop and dance

- I used to listen to his music while studying in high school

Saukrates

- Hiphop and R&B
