I haven't played a new mainline Pokemon game since X, which I abandoned halfway through because I got bored lol.
My favorites are Black/White and their sequels. I think gen 5 is the peak of the series. I've heard some people say Scarlet/Violet were good despite their performance issues. I've also been told I would like them as a gen 5 fan.
I played PLA and had fun with it. It's pretty shallow, and I got bored once I neared the end game, but the concept was a breath of fresh air even if the execution wasn't superb.
So it goes without saying that Pokemon has stagnated the past few years.
The new Legends game looked interesting, but it was just released that they are locking 5 Mega evolutions behind DLC and ranked matches.
PLA was a single player experience. And now they are pushing PvP in its follow-up, AND locking Pokemon behind paid DLC, or competitive play which requires an online subscription???
It's so fucked lol. Not to mention I just found out they're releasing a new game called Champions, which is solely for PVP. Just to give you an idea of where the priorities lie.
I've pretty much given up on the possibility of Gamefreak putting out proper mainline games. They still break records with sales and obviously aren't hurting for money or a player base, so there's no incentive to try and polish the mainline titles.
Pokemon is the highest-grossing media franchise of all time, beating out the second highest franchise (which is literally Mickey Mouse/Disney) by nearly twice its total revenue. It's too big to fail.

A lot of this is just what online gaming/gaming on console is now. if u wanna play any fighting game on console you need to pay for a subscription and if you want all the characters you'll need to buy the season pass. same thing with battle royals and fps games. it's just become a part of playing games which sucks and is why I don't play online games much. I still think the pokemon games are fun as a 30 something hour simple rpgs which in my eyes is what pokemon has always been. although scarlet and violet releasing really buggy and bad looking was really disappointing but it is just how 70% of games launch now.

as an outside observer (haven't played any games since the DS era, platinum being my overall favorite), I think pokemon is in a uniquely odd place. it's a pretty culturally ubiquitous franchise, but is well past its peak popularity while having more staying power than your average fad. it's extremely multimedia, but some aspects of that seem to have almost entirely disappeared (grew up reading the manga, but my significantly younger sibling and cousins who are obsessed with the franchise know nothing about that aspect of it) despite the fact that it is generating more capital than ever. the games also seem to have an extremely split audience. there's thousands of articles and thinkpieces about how newer pokemon games are too easy for their adult fanbase, but these seem to completely ignore the fact that the core audience is children with very little RPG experience. I don't know what this really means for the franchise going forward, they don't seem to struggle financially or in interest whatsoever. just interesting.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. they're realizing they can get away with more and more, and really it feels like that's where the industry as a whole is headed. I loved PLA and it felt like a step in the right direction. guess I'll go back and replay gen 4 for the thousandth time lol

PLA was exciting and i agree, it felt like they were finally breaking out of the formula to try something new for the first time in ages....only to do a 180 w the next game
i think it's time to give up on gamefreak, the writing has been on the wall for years which is sad
i haven't played gen 4 since i was a kid but my first game was diamond and i LOVED soul silver. my fave gen is 5 as i said, i replay them a lot
have you ever played rom hacks? they're really great. pokemon unbound is the GOAT!!!! literally the BEST pokemon experience i've had in yearssssss, you gotta try it out.
it's a GBA fire red rom hack in a fanmade region, has pokemon all the way up to gen 8, lots of QoL stuff from the new gens with the gameplay of the old gens. it's literally peak.
you can play it on tons of systems, pc or phone or if u have a ds or 3ds you can hack it and put custom games on it. i hacked my buddy's 3ds and added it, and he put in 200+ hours lol, it's that fuckin good

Sorry ignore the Piers profile pic lol, but like literally why are they advertising DLC for something that isn’t even out. That just means they’re selling an incomplete game. Like it’s the worst it’s ever been for pokemon, and it frustrates me that people are still gonna support it no matter how far it falls

such a sad state of affairs. ik i'm just repeating shit that everybody's said already, but pokemon has just become a media franchise first and a video game series second. the games are just there to push the product; the product no longer serves to push the actual GAMES.
nintendo is lucky the zelda and mario teams are still putting out bangers otherwise i legit would have no reason to buy anything from them again tbh lol.
for the past year and a half i've just been playing my 3ds and tbh retro gaming is where it's at. imma just play all games like 10-15 years after release at this rate lollll. get all the patches, updates, dlc, mods, etc so you aren't being drip fed content by asshole devs
