Macintosh, Windows, Linux, (or another open-source system), and why?

Hi everybody!

I'm supposed to be in school right now, but hey, I'd rather be doing other things, as per usual. That said, I've got a question for the SpaceHey community that's been on my mind for a bit!

If you had the choice of using a Macintosh, (I refuse to call it Mac--just did, didn't I? .-.), Microsoft Windows, a Linux distribution, or another oddball operating system? What would you choose; why would you choose it? Personally, I prefer the Macintosh operating system, (I specifically love MacOS 8.6, though I use MacOS X 10.15 as a daily driver) but I also will willing use Linux distributions as they make for fantastic development/programming environments! I also love how lightweight most Linux distributions are...Realistically, the reason I use Macintosh is because it's a nice middle-road between Unix, open-source, and simplicity/elegance... Sure, the Macintosh operating system may not be "open-source", but its simplicity and powerful features is what I've come to enjoy so much. (And that in my family, we all have used Macintosh computers for over 25 years....)

ANYWAY! What operating system do you use, and why do you use it? I'd appreciate your opinion!

for what I use my computer I've come to the realization that the best operating system is linux, specifically Open SUSE. It's a perfect mix of east-of-use and a light weight installation. I have it set up with a generic desktop environment (or IceWM ) thus I get the bare bones of the operating system. Afterwards it's just running a few commands to install programs like VLC, kakoune etc. It's so good especially with window managers like i3.

(that's enough linux glazing for today lol)

Okay, out of all available Linux distributions in the wild, why does Linux Mint seem to be the go-to for everyone that's commented? Not dogging it in anyway, I love Mint, but why is that the case?

it;s very beginner friendly and tends to have a very Apple like philosophy of "It just works". It comes with everything out of the box

Rn I'm Using Win 10, MacOS and Win XP for retro games on my old Thinkpad. But as soon as I finish my projects I'm replacing Win 10 with Mint

Good choice. Windows 10's EOL is approaching, and GOOD RIDDANCE in my humble opinion. Windows 11 is equally as god-awful as 10...it was especially awful when it got leaked back a couple years ago...I was apart of the first batch of early beta testers, and 11 ran like a slug on my crappy HP notebook w/ 4GB RAM and an AMD Athlon Sliver...that budget PC sucked, man.

i grew up on windows since XP so thats my go-to if i just want something to work out of the box and still be compatible with nearly everything i want to do. however, i feel like new windows OS's are getting more bloated with every release:(

i feel like such a granny trying to operate anything mac/apple - i unearthed an ancient ipod and it took me embarrassingly long to get used to it and the itunes program lol. it is very aesthetically pleasing to use after getting the hang of it though and i see why there are lots of die-hard applers out there

linux is a mixed bag depending on use case imo. i have a small desktop loaded with mint + cinnamon that i used for lightweight server hosting and before that played around w arch & kali for uni. not a lot of compatiblity even w/ mint and all the adjustments you gotta make are cool for super-custom setups but sometimes u just want something to work right off the bat, yk?

I totally understand! For Linux I usually start out with a lightweight CLI/server installation and then just install a very lightweight GUI using the xorg tools to select/install something like KDE or GNOME (I prefer the GNUStep GUI...I love NeXTStep, and it being an open-source implementation of NeXTStep's GUI is lovely...), but that's what I do with Linux personally!

I also grew up using XP/Vista at my grandparents...those are the only two Windows versions that I'll ever use just because they hold a special place in my heart. :P

Uh right now I'm on a chrome laptop, but I have a computer that runs mint. the reason why I have a chrome laptop is because my mother forbids me to change the OS for this. The reason I have a Linux mint is one, I was tired of window's bloatware, two, my computer was filled with stuff and three, I wanted something NOT windows.

I get not wanting anything Windows based.

The latest installments of Microsoft Windows (8-11), have been utterly disgusting. They're basically this:

"Yeah, I'll take a lil' operating system with my advertisements!"
