Chaos is infinite & random Possibility. It will inevitably generate every possible pattern.
We are merely some of those emergent patterns.
Patterns can be detected, imitated, altered, and created. Thus, there is a distinct external reality.
The true nature of this reality is chaotic and incomprehensible.
Our meaning-making abilities allow us to distinguish familiar patterns and navigate this Void.
Some patterns are observed similarly by many, therefore this outer world is shared. All individuals are instances within a greater pattern.
No two individuals will ever have the exact same experience, so the shared world is filtered through the personal. That is to say: meaning-makers are each unique self-contained Minds.
Most human endeavors create meaning in patterns they observe, even if there is no meaning there. Meaning-making is compulsive, and necessary to our being. The primary operating systems of the human soul are apophenia and pareidolia.
Order – and by extension, the very concept of Chaos – are not just illusory, but intentional fiction, lines drawn in the sand for convenience.
Human constructs serve a purpose. They allow us to navigate the incomprehensible Cosmos and bring us comfort in the face of the unknown.
Art, language, and philosophy allow us to communicate and cooperate. Logic, math, and science let us explore and construct a virtual map of the Universe. Through the various methods of meaning-making, we can alter the external reality and create new patterns.
Thus it could be said magick exists – not as a fantastical arcane system – but as a metaphysical and psychological framework in which human endeavors transcend the internal. Patterns generated by Minds are projected outward as language, art, music, arithmetic, engineering, et cetera.
Through ritual behavior inspired by these inner patterns, we impose Order upon Chaos.
Ordo ab Chao.
