In my college Japanese class this past Friday a group of exchange students from Japan visited our class and we spoke to eachother in smaller groups! I met Mio and Mizuki they were both super cool and nice, mizuki gave us little goodie bags with Japanese candy in them, and mio and I bonded over Evangelion. Apart of the class activity wa Sakai to teach each other useful phrases or slang in each others languages. Mio taught us Yabai (a catch all exclamation) and Merui (melting, like when something is too cute) I taught them “Tuff” and “type shit” LMAOOOO
Ryugakusei!! (Exchange students)

I wish I had this experience in college. My Japanese class was in a college on the East Coast, so my professor was the only Japanese person I knew.
Here in Oregon, there are far more Japanese people, but even the young ones refuse to interact with you or hold a conversation unless you can speak it PERFECTLY and I got shunned out of a Meetup meant for practicing it for that same reason.
When I actually visited Japan a year ago, I had no problems whatsoever communicating with people, so maybe it's an immigrants-discriminating-against-Americans thing where I live or something.
im also on the east coast but my college/town is lucky enough to have a sister city and school in Japan!!
