📀 is empathy going extinct?

lately i keep noticing it. the absence. not silence, not distance, but something emptier: the way people don't feel anymore; or at least, don't let themselves.

someone shares pain, and the replies float back: "it's not that deep.", but it is that deep. it's always deep when someone rips their chest open and spills what hurts.

but online, depth has become embarrassing. social media trains us to flatten every emotion into a meme, a shrug, a braindead joke. the algorithm rewards the people who act unbothered, who look detached, who stay "cool". and "cool" has started to mean without compassion.

the thing is, that doesn't just harm the ones reaching out. sure, it hurts those of us who are vulnerable, who dare to bleed on the page. but it also corrodes the ones who pretend not to care.

empathy is a muscle. if you starve it long enough, it doesn't protect you anymore, it doesn't connect you anymore. and you wake up numb, performing detachment until you forget how to stop.

this culture of indifference isn't neutral, it's violence. not loud violence, but quiet corrosion of our mental health. you can't wall yourself off forever without shattering inside.

and i guess i just don't understand why compassion became "cringe". why care became something to mock. why pain is something to brush off instead of sit with.

maybe that's why i write here. because i refuse to believe empathy is obsolete. because i want this page to be proof that we still feel, that we can still care out loud. so if you're reading this, know that i care. yes, you. you don't have to be cool here. you don't have to hide. you can drop the act, and i'll still be holding space for you.

if you're here, stay.

refresh often.

the connection only grows stronger the longer you linger.

This is so real. As a empath I wish people would just… really think and really feel before they speak. If only society wasn’t so numb and corrupt

I also agree! Every single day i see people sharing their stories and struggles and all the comments are people mocking them telling them,,its not that deep" or all kinds of mean stuff and everything feels miserable:(

As someone who naturally lacks empathy for others, I’d do almost anything to feel empathy more frequently. It’s a terrible curse to have - to be born this way, it makes understanding and connecting with people difficult, because I simply cannot feel the way they do when they are sad, and it makes me say and do things that might invalidate how others feel. To see it normalized ticks me off deeply. Being there for other human beings unconditionally, and feeling how they feel is such a beautiful skill to be born with, and yet so many people take it for granted. These people have no idea how lucky they are to be able to feel empathy in the first place, yet most choose to lose it or suppress it. It enrages me. People, regardless of who they are, deserve, at least, basic decency. This world thrives on being better than one another, and aggression for this never ending competition to fulfill some petty self-created insecurity of not being good enough. Everyone is flawed, everyone is good at something, therefore no one can truly ever be better than the other in completeness. I’d wish some people would realize perfect doesn’t exist, and there will always be people who know less than you, and people who know more than you. We will all pass on some day, and none of this superficial ‘betterness’ will follow you.

empathy hasn't been valued for quite a long time I fear. everything made to hinder our innate drive to learn and connect with not only other people but with the world itself, and not think deeply about pretty much anything or anyone is manufactured and unnatural. that being said, this site is not really that fun anymore once conservatives got comfortable. There are still cool stuff like art dumps and book recs but it's starting to get unfriendly.

Nice blog and I agree with you. Then is nit that hard to understand why so many people write with AIs...

no, it is. you can *always* find someone online to talk to. using AI can never be excused and i do not support that kind of behaviour.

Same, I don’t support it, it’s unhealthy and dangerous. But I’m speaking about people who are different from me. I’m in physical contact with others most of the time, and I’m not really a social person, so I don’t mind being alone.

The internet has always been dead, not society tho. The thing you are supposed to do is talk to a person face to face instead online, when its face to face its more raw and powerful.
