What is DPI?
DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) examines the actual payload of network packets and applies filtering rules based on that content.
When you stream a YouTube video, only the video/audio packets are exchanged. DPI can still extract metadata—title, duration, resolution, etc.—and even block VPN traffic if it recognises the underlying protocol.
Consequences for privacy:
- What you watch is visible.
- How long you watch is logged.
- Potential for targeted throttling or blocking.

What is Tor?
Tor (The Onion Router) routes your traffic through three encrypted relays, each stripping a layer of encryption—hence the “onion” metaphor. This makes it extremely difficult for any single observer to link you to the destination site.
Tor’s Three Layers

| 3. Exit Relay | Knows the destination site but not your IP. |
Because no single relay possesses the full picture, Tor provides strong anonymity and helps bypass censorship. However, some networks still block standard Tor nodes.
Bridges – Hidden Entry Points
Bridges are unlisted guard relays that make it harder for censors to discover and block Tor traffic.
