My Camera Collection - Entry 1: My Sony Mavica (1999)

I love my Mavica

The Mavica was one of the first digital cameras produced by Sony. Coincidentally, it is also one of the first digital cameras I have owned.

As much as I love it, it is difficult to remember when I found it. One or two years ago, my friend and I were perusing estate sales in a very upscale neighborhood when we came across the Mavica in a rich guy's basement. My friend encouraged me to snag it, but I argued that I didn't need it; I had never even really interacted with a large camera like this before, let alone taken photos with one. He pointed out how it perfectly matched my collection (more like an obsession) of my 1980s to 2010 tech things. It had bright, pretty, and retro stickers, it used floppy disks, and was bulky as all hell. He put up a fight, and I ended up buying it for ~25$.

On the way home, I rolled it around in my hands and slowly became more obsessed with it. Its switches sounded satisfying, its bulky size felt good to wield, and it worked! It actually functioned!

My Sony Mavica (Sony Digital Mavica MVC-FD91) uses a 3.5" floppy disk to store images or video. Depending on the size of the photo (the max size is 1024x768), I could get about 15 to 16 photos on each floppy. Just don't bother with the video aspect; it is so compressed that the video is unrecognizable, and you only get around 20 to 10 seconds. With a new battery, I could get it to stay charged for a bit past three hours, even if it claimed it had a max battery life of two hours.

It takes fantastically retro images. Regardless of the subject, your image will look like it is ripped straight from the 2000s. After each photo is captured, the camera has to take a good 15 seconds of satisfying whirring and clicking to write the photo on the floppy disk. Another feature I quite enjoy is the ability to toggle between the adjustable LCD screen and the viewfinder. It displays all the information from the LCD in the viewfinder and vice versa. I love how all the mechanics, the switch to open the flash and the floppy disk eject primarily, are extremely springy.

I honestly don't have any complaints with its functionality, and it is wonderfully easy to use. Parts are a little hard to find, but that is to be expected. It didn't come with a strap (lesbo joke here), so if anyone has any great recommendations for camera straps, let me know.

I will post a couple of photos of the camera itself below, as well as some photos taken with it (don't expect anything great, I am an amateur). Have a wonderful day, y'all!

awesome, i have a nikon coolpix s3000 which is relatively newer (~2010 if i remember correctly), but if you crank down the resolution setting and turn on the flash the images have a similar feel, you can use an sd card with it though which is a huge QOL improvement
