I got this from an antique in Oregon for 6 bucks. The cashier politely told me the cap is fake, only the tail is genuine fur. I was quietly insulted the rest of the day, because I thought he thought I must be an idiot.
This hide is 4' by 5', approximately. I got it 2024 as a Christmas gift. I hope the Amazon Reindeer Skin Factory treated this calf nicely... Wishful thinking.
The last pelt was my first rabbit pelt. I tacked a load of keychains to it, hence the thumbtacks. The rest of the pelts are currently nailed to an Australian flag.
Marten stole, with 2 closed-tan pelts. There's a fake fabric jaw sewn to the lower jaw of one of the martens, for the scarf functionality. Beautiful coloring, very soft, and relatively big.
I picked this up from an antique because I didn't want to leave empty handed. It was overpriced.
One of my crewmates over my summer forestry season found a half-buried bone in the dirt, told me to dig it up. Turned out to be a very weathered elk vertebrae.
I had to scrape out dry maggots from the hooves. Cleaned it as best as I could, it's pretty well mummified.
You can still see the fat and bone.
Neat earrings I found at an antique. The heads are a little less than a square inch in area.
I found this on the trail while doing field work over by the Snake River. Looks to be the tail of a sagebrush lizard.
Gifted to me, an alligator foot keychain.
Picked up at a gas station in Oregon.
Nymph of a tea seed bug.
A frog-legged beetle.
Yellow Sac Spider, a common house pest.
I picked these out of a few owl pellets from the area, all of these bones are from mice.
These are also from owl pellets, all mice. There's 3 skulls in this bottle. I found more, but my fat fingers crushed most of them.
I found these jaw bones in a field at one of my campsites over the summer season. It was a young cow, as shown by the points of the teeth.
I let my crewmates take teeth from this one.
I got this from an overpriced antique for 5 bucks, about 7 inches in length.
Shell of a red-eared slider, common house pet.
Winter wren, I found it dead in the house. Preserved in a brine solution.
I found this wren a few days ago, headless, being carried around in my cat's mouth, at 7am, right before leaving for school. Preserved in a brine solution, as quickly as I could.
Side view of the headless wren.
This is the wing of the first bird I ever preserved, a winter wren. I was going to preserve both wings, but I botched the other one, really scuffed it up. Preserved in a brine solution.
Side view of the wing.
This is the head of the same bird, preserved in isopropyl alcohol.
Closer view of the head.
Legs of the same bird, preserved in isopropyl alcohol.
Closer view of the legs.
Another winter wren. This one was dead in the garage, real mutilated, so I only took a wing. Preserved in isopropyl alcohol.

this is so cool. I have a question though.
I found a dead bat in perfect condition, an endemic species and I want to preserve it. How would I go about making a wet specimen?
obviously if you know, that's great, but if you don't, don't worry about it.
Inject the eyes, sphincter, and chest cavity with isopropyl alcohol, store in sealed container with isopropyl alcohol.
This is not at all the proper way to go about preservation, and unless by a miracle, will lead to it rotting. I do this because I don't mind any decomposition as long as it stays in the jar.
My other method is mixing salt into warm water until it no longer dissolves, and storing the specimen there. This is also a terrible way to do it.
If you're in a time crunch, and gotta get the supplies first (in which I suggest proper materials, like formalin) I've put my stuff in plastic baggies and stored it in the freezer for up to 8 hours. This is, again, not proper technique, and will lead to a very stiff and unpleasant to work with cadaver, and it will smell.

Is it just me, or did my hungry ass think the background was baked beans.
But my favorite part about your collection was the bones. I've been collecting bones as well, and yours look so clean in nice!!
Don't give me too much credit, I've never cleaned a single bone. Their filth is very much still intact

beautiful! it's really impressive to see the critters that you have personally preserved! i'm a taxidermy collector as well; i especially like collecting bugs, and i have a scorpion preserved like your bugs that was made into a bolo tie :) super cool, thanks for sharing!

Everytime I pass by your blog, I just think very often on how cool you are. I think taxidermy itself is so fascinating and I adore how specimens like these are well-kept and I hope they remain cherished forever.
They don't need much to be well-kept, especially when anything above rotting smells and visible decay is all I want of it. I appreciate the comment, thank you

I got some vintage bug taxidermy a couple years back for Christmas and they're my prized possessions. getting older taxidermy is underrated!!
youve got an impressive collection :0
Thank you

I could never buy newer pieces, my wallet would be very angry with me

I always worry to buy newer pieces in case the poor thing was killed in a fur farm or something of the sorts so I just look for the stuff thats already out there :D it does have the added benefit of being slightly cheaper too hehe
i do desperately want replica skulls too! just unsure where to buy them HERHEHAHHE! my school has a cat skeleton and i just droll over it! i also visit a museum with a replica sabertooth and domestic cat skull. replicas are always a good option and i reeeaaaaallllllllyyyy want some,,
ive also got a mate who hikes a lot and hes got a museum, as he calls it, of bones. coolest guy i know honestly! he made me a matching bracelet with bin chicken and bush turkey vertebrae

You can find free bones everywhere! Plenty of roadkill to go around. Burying the body and waiting some good while for all the stuffs in the ground to eat the meat and all that is a pretty common practice... I will dig up my cat in a year or so... Free cat bones
