new and old nosferatu

Thiz last weekend i've finally watched the original Nosferatu movie - with live music performed too!! It waz sooooo cool! I went with Zander, obviously, we're basically inseperable.

Finally seeing the original made me appreciate both the old and new version so much more than before. I won't lie, really old movies are not always my cup of tea. Of course I appreciate the craftsmanship but given I'm only 18, I'm obviously used to the way newer movies (that is 80s and after) are structured plot wise and what is considered an aesthetically pleasing film. It was also my first time seeing a silent movie in full!

That being said, I absolutely loved the original. The pictures had to be taken for so long and with so much more effort than nowadays, given the equipment they had. I don't know at all what the budget was (i couldn't find any information on that matter) but I'm sure it was a lot - it genuinely amazed me how much they've done even with the limited technology of early 20th century (i believe?) The human mind and need to make art truly knows no bounds!

In comparison, the remake is of course much more gorey - as it's now a norm to see blood in movies, especially horror ones. It's also much more sexually charged, which i don't mind at all in this case, i actually loved it. And finally the biggest change was the further exploration and much more explanation on Ellen's character and her relationship with Nosferatu. I really appreciate how the writers decided to go about it - in my opinion, it makes much more sense and makes it even more dramatic and terrifying to have her form a relationship with the vampire in the past, rather than for him to only see one picture of her and decide to take a really long trip to see her.

I think that the remake was trully loyal to the original, and that the changes made were a strong improvement to the storyline. The atmosphere in both movies was amazing and I absolutely adore the potrayal of vampires as ungodly, beast-like creatures, rather than attractive, immortal humanoids.

If you have any thoughts about this movie I'd love to hear them!! I love vampires and everything to do with them so I'm all ears and fangs up for discussion (or just a chat!)

All love!

I agree, the new one was very faithful to the old one. I saw the old one first so I was able to compare them as I watched the new one and I was really impressed. They seemed to only add things. As far as I could tell nothing was removed. Which is surprising with how remakes these days seem to generally have a distain for the source material or try to differentiate themselves.

Another great classic horror movie is Frankenstein (1931). That old movie is so much fun to watch in October.
