The Bat-Light Series #7: The Sisters Of Mercy

"This place is death with walls" — The Bat-Light Series Edition 7 shines the bat-light on The Sisters of Mercy, often seen as one of the defining bands of the goth rock movement, though frontman Andrew Eldritch himself always resisted the label. Their dark, driving sound and sharp imagery nevertheless shaped the genre and inspired countless bands.

Formed in Leeds in 1980, The Sisters of Mercy quickly rose to prominence with their dark, hypnotic sound built on drum machines, driving basslines, and Andrew Eldritch’s distinctive baritone. Their early singles, such as Alice, Anaconda, and The Damage Done, captured a raw intensity that helped define the UK’s emerging goth rock scene. With iconic releases such as First and Last and Always and Floodland, the band created music that was both atmospheric and powerful, leaving a permanent mark on alternative music. Known for their striking live performances and enduring cult status, they built a loyal following that remains strong to this day. Notable band members alongside Andrew over the years include Gary Marx, Craig Adams, Wayne Hussey, and Patricia Morrison, with the current lineup featuring Andrew Eldritch, Ben Christo, and Kai. Their influence can be heard in the works of countless artists, including Nine Inch Nails, Paradise Lost, HIM, and Fields of the Nephilim, cementing their legacy as one of the most impactful bands of their era.

Selected track: Body Electric — first released as a 7" single in April 1982, paired with the B-side Adrenochrome. Also featured on the 1992 compilation album Some Girls Wander by Mistake, which collected The Sisters of Mercy's early singles and EPs from 1980 to 1983.
