i'm a little annoyed by how much "poser" discourse there is in the alt community (mostly coming from tiktok)
the only way someone can be a poser is if they genuinely do not engage with the subculture at all, they just say they do. this very rarely happens honestly..most people that are called posers either can't yet afford to dress exactly like their subculture or are simply new to the subculture.
people aren't born knowing the entire history of the emo movement..they have to learn these things. and if they're even attempting to learn these things they cannot be called a poser.
i had my first "emo phase" in the 6th grade. (i only call it a phase cus the intensity of it was short-lived, but i never stopped being emo, i just stopped outwardly expressing it) i listened to black veil brides, pierce the veil, panic!, fall out boy, mcr, etc. i was called a poser many times when in fact i was just 12 and consuming the content that was available to me. i did my best to dress emo but my mom still bought my clothes!! however, if i didn't have this exposure to the subculture, i probably wouldn't be alternative/emo today.
anyways my point is to give newcomers grace, these people need to feel comfortable and accepted within these subcultures or they won't engage with them at all.
just be nice plz

Honestly thats what'd i expect from ppl on tiktok. Ppl take words and change their meaning the more ppl use them, and it drastically gets taken outta context because some ppl use it without knowing what it means.
This happens alot in the alt community., or just fashion community. ^_^
I do get what you mean tho! Like some ppl cant afford or just cant get the clothes thatd make them look part of the alt community and calling them posers is just mean.

sadly people on tiktok learn a word and start overusing it to the point it loses it's meaning x_x
