Im mostly talking about emo, but i guess this could be applied to goth or anything else tbh. You could simply say, "emo is a music based subculture, and if you dont listen to the music then you're just not emo" and some people would absolutely lose their shit, yapping about how its gatekeeping the style or somthing. Like be so fr. If there is no rules or at least a set of things you have to check off, then is it really a subculture? Its like conservative punks or being goth and hating the art, style and music. You can dress however you want, but you cant call yourself something if you're simply just not.
I hate when people act like rules in subcultures are gatekeeping

Numerous times I've seen people new to a scene/subculture try to identify with it yet try to change the rules. That really just waters down the subculture and it really annoys me. An example of this is when you compare old country music to new country music which is so different. This is why I think some gatekeeping is necessary. There is nothing wrong with being new, just respect the culture and it's core values.
