Yearning for the days of a simpler web?

If you're using this site not only because of nostalgia, but also because you wish you could return to a time when the web wasn't full of bloat and privacy-invasive corporate crap, then I would like to suggest that you check out the alternative web protocol Gemini. Per their official website, Gemini...

  • is heavier than Gopher
  • is lighter than the web
  • will not replace either
  • strives for maximum power to weight ratio
  • takes user privacy very seriously
If that piques your interest, you can read more about it on the official site (located here). You won't find any animations, pictures, or even Java on Gemini. Just text and the capsules (as Gemini sites are called) that make use of it, whether as blogs or as discussion forums. It's like a breath of fresh air to me.

The official site also gives a list of Gemini clients here if you'd like to explore Gemini space for yourself. I personally use Amfora at my terminal, because that's all you really need, but there are also graphical browsers and even a way to explore Gemini without even installing anything if all you wanna do is dip your toes in the water first.

Although Gemini is still obscure and niche, it's a lovely space on the internet. It feels friendly and quiet, like a small park. So if you're interested, please do check it out!
