The Minor Problem on SpaceHey

Let me start by saying...I really want to enjoy SpaceHey. The whole appeal of the site is a return to that old-school internet vibe. The MySpace nostalgia, the freedom to customize your profile, the raw, unfiltered community. That’s why I signed up in the first place. But there’s one thing that’s been bugging me a lot, the sheer number of minors on the site.

And I don’t mean this in a "kids these days" kind of way. I’m talking about the noticeable, sometimes overwhelming, presence of very young users, often under 16...flooding the feed, comments, and bulletins with content that’s, frankly, not always age-appropriate for them or for us.

SpaceHey isn’t officially a kid’s site. In fact, it’s marketed as a social platform for anyone craving that mid-2000s internet feel. But when you're scrolling and suddenly realize most of the people talking in forums or leaving comments are talking about homework, middle school drama, or how their parents won’t let them stay up late...it’s jarring.

It also creates a weird dynamic. Many of us joined SpaceHey expecting a more mature or nostalgic crowd, late millennials, older Gen Z, maybe even some Gen Xers looking to relive their MySpace days. But what we often find instead is a site where the most active users are teenagers who weren’t even born when the original MySpace was popular.

This isn't about gatekeeping the internet. Minors have every right to be online. But when a site becomes saturated with a specific age group, it changes the overall tone and experience for everyone else. The way people interact, the kind of content that gets posted, and even the humor! all of it shifts.

Not to mention, it creates moderation concerns. Some older users (creepy ones) may exploit that imbalance, and that’s a genuine safety risk. I remember being on Omegle and KIK when I was teen, that was and is still some of the most weirdest/disgusting stuff Ive seen. not to mention the amount of people that have acknowledge and spoke about how they were groomed on both sites. I'll admit that my parents could have done better at controlling my internet use, but these are reasons I feel uncomfortable with minors on the internet.

I don’t know what the solution is. Maybe there should be better age-based community segmentation. Maybe there should be a clearer focus on who the platform is really for. But until then, the experience will continue to feel a little off and honestly, kind of annoying.

So yeah. That’s my rant. I just wish SpaceHey felt more like the grown-up nostalgia zone it claims to be… and less like a digital playground.

I agree with you, but I have to say that YOUNGER teenagers shouldn't be on this site or surf the internet unristricted in general, like I think that the age limit should be around 16-17 and above. Strangers lurk on the internet that could do real harm to kids. But I think generally that teens who are above age of 16 are not much kids but more like young adults and that they can act more like ya AND that they have a better sense of stranger danger if yk what I'm talking about.

Report Comment

As a 14 y/o I disagree. The only way I could be harmed would be if I was stupid enough to give someone my home address and/or if I agreed to meet them which I wouldn’t.

Ik that I'm late but just bc YOU wouldn't do this doesn't mean that any other ppl wouldnt do that as well.

I think I get what you mean. However predators and pedos are not only found online. (Read my blog about how I was recently targeted by a pedo living just afew blocks away from me). But I do get that just because I wouldn’t give my home address or agree to meet anyone doesn’t mean no other kids would. I do sometimes notice how some of my friends just casually give out personal information. I do have an idea and I’m curious as to whether it makes sense to you. My idea is that rather having a specific age before you can go online have a course in internet safety that everyone has to take and pass the exam before they can access the internet. Then once they pass they would be given a unique code without which they would not be able to access the internet. No code no access.

by Child of Light; ; Report

Now I am not that sure if I agree with the exam part, but I agree that at LEAST the parents have to teach their children everything about internet safety, because I know that a lot of parents don't do that.

Ok. Thanks for replying to me. I appreciate it. I quite agree that teaching internet safety is important and,in an ideal world,it would be parents teaching it but I suspect alot of parents don’t bother and I also suspect that many of them don’t actually know themselves. In my own case (as well as having above average common sense myself) my mom actually checks my social media usage to make sure I’m keeping safe. Many of my peers would resent that but I don’t because of how much my mom has done to keep me safe both online and irl.

I share your concern, i'm barely an adult now thtas kinda the reson i only came back until i was 18, a lot of what i saw here the first time was really not for kids, there should be a more extrict moderation now that this place is full of kids.

I get it, teens already have discord, it feels like young adults don't really have online spaces for them.

I agree with you, even tho I myself am not yet an adult im not a child or lets say below the group of 16. I personally think anyone can go on spacehey, because it is an all age friendly and creative website, but it's just that it was created to make friends. I'm not saying that minors and "older" people cant be friends, but in my oppinion it's just a bit weird with everything going on everywhere.

I dont really see the issue exactly
sites like these even if they didn't have the 2000s aesthetic would still be mostly teens simply due to the profiles and being able to depict a more nuanced picture of yourself in this tiny corner of the Internet rather then the dead and soulless profiles on moderns socials thay all look the exact same.
you say you dont want to gatekeep but this is gatekeeping

I mean you can't really stop teens being here, just don't add them back or interact with them. Plus, you don't have to be in 18+ to have a good contribution to a platform, a lot of teens here post stuff that really takes me back to when I went through a similar thing, and then I can feel mature by bestowing my wisdom upon them or whatever. Maybe just focus on keeping them safe, because they're not exactly going anywhere.

i think the best thing to do is just have a DNI list (yes its very chronically online but whatever) the thing about this site is that you can CHOOSE who u are friends with. Like, most kids have their ages on their profiles. if not, u can prolly gauge it. Besides, most of us teens are also here to fraternize with, well, other teens (and young adults if we are older teens). Honestly, I think there is enough diversity in users here you can find a group of people YOU wanna hang with.

I kinda get your point but you also have to remember that this is the internet, a free range platform for everybody regardless of whether or not you should be here. If you have a problem with minors on the internet don't use it at all or ignore the minors that are on here. Whether you like it or not minors will be on social platforms, even if 18+ restrictions are added we're more than likely going to find ways around it. This last part is kinda a mean opinion but I think maybe you should stop trying to chase nostalgia and let us have a chance to experience the fun you had on Myspace when you were our age.

Don't take this too personally, I am just a random teen after all...

were you not a teen on myspace? i feel like that was like the main demographic for then, it makes sense that when it's redone it would be mostly teens again

+ adults have jobs and stuff, it also makes sense that teens have more time + desire to just be online blogging nd asking for advice nd wtv

Here's the thing, though. Back then, the internet was still fairly new and social media even newer. We didn't know the dangers that came with either one back then. Both were pretty much lawless realms where you can say/do pretty much anything you wanted with little to know repercussions. People would give out their information freely, there were many sites dedicated to revenge porn (especially involving underaged girls), getting cancelled wasn't really a thing so people would say the most bigoted things without a care.

Now we do know how dangerous the internet is, especially for minors. Which is why so many adults advocate for either kids to not be on any social media sites/apps or for these sites/apps to have spaces or versions that are strictly ONLY for teens.

yea but at the same time the Internet isnt new anymore
everyone thats not 12 already knows abt that
we've all heard the stories
its 2025 now grandma

Do you though? You should look up how many murder or missing persons cases involve a minor and an adult that the child thought was their partner or friend.

I think the reason why a lot of teenagers (13-17) are going onto this site, and this is coming from me, a 13 year old teen girl, is that this site is comparably a LOT LESS judgemental and more friendly compared to other mainstream social media sites. I’ve been on this site for a couple of months now, I haven’t been extremely active though within these last couple of weeks just due to school starting back up. Yet from what I’ve seen and the people I have friended and interacted with, they are 100 times nicer than on an app like TikTok. On TikTok, I have to worry about if I say something that somehow insulting or mention that I like/am apart of a fandom that isn’t liked by a majority of people on the app, that I’ll get doxxed or the people around me get doxxed. While on here, Spacehey, you are able to say what you want say and be apart of anything you want (though there is some limitations of course), and no one will judge you and will actually support you fully. Also, this site in general is also better to post just random anonymous rants/vents about stuff without people in your life knowing who you are and you don’t have to worry as much about getting bullied IRL. (Btw, I know the blog creator probably won’t even read this, but I still felt like I should add my view on this.)

I mean I feel like as long as social media exists there will be creepy people. As long as the minors aren't like 12/13 or under then you would generally know how to avoid these people. You can't just not let minors on a platform because a certain demographic is also on?? Literally every social media platform, including YouTube kids have disturbing content not meant for certain demographics!!

Didn't myspace have teens on it though?? I mean respectfully it's not crazy if teenagers are on it when that's always been the environment. As a teenager we are incredibly annoying (what teenager isn't?) but you can't fully erase teenagers from online spaces. And I promise a 15 year old logging on here is not hindering your ability to not talk to them lol, the best thing to do is actually moderate properly.

I think it's best to be the adult that you are, and not interact with the minors posting, as you say, inappropriate content. Kids rarely have safe spaces of their own, so if they happen to be in a place with adults, it's the adults' moral duty to let them have that safety by not engaging with them when they're acting their age. (I hope I worded that correctly.) Point is, leave them be. Tell other adults to do the same.
